New merchandise for Spider-Man: No Way Home gives audiences a look at Mysterio propaganda that may or may not be featured in the next film. In Spider-Man: Far From Home’s mid-credits scene, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and MJ (Zendaya) react to a news broadcast in which the late Quentin Beck/Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) uses his public image as a hero to reveal Spider-Man’s identity and implicate him as a murderer. This clip is followed by J.K. Simmons’ reprisal of J. Jonah Jameson, who predictably calls the webslinger a menace.

Long before Disney+’s Loki liberated the Sacred Timeline and opened the multiverse, Simmons’ cameo supported many theories regarding the appearance of past Sony characters in Spider-Man: No Way Home. It’s since been confirmed that Holland’s Spider-Man will join forces with Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to deal with Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 and Jamie Foxx’s Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The casting announcements have lent credence to speculation that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men will also appear. Multiversal conundrums aside, Holland’s Peter Parker will still need to clear his name. Rumors persist that he will do so with the help of Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock/Daredevil.

The fan-run Twitter account Spider-Man: No Way Home News recently posted a photo featuring various shirts that are now available for purchase on Amazon. A couple of these shirts read “we believe Mysterio,” suggesting that Peter will most likely be on trial in Spider-Man: No Way Home both in the court of public opinion and, most likely, in an actual courtroom. Spider-Man: Far From Home dealt with the legacy of Tony Stark/Iron Man. In an attempt to become the new Iron Man, Mysterio uses his Elementals to stage disasters and depict himself as a hero. While Spider-Man discovers this and stops the villain, Mysterio’s proactive video slandering Peter capitalizes on the public's already-positive perception of the former. Peter will need either Doctor Strange’s magic or a lawyer to clear his name. Cox’s acclaimed portrayal of the lawyer, Murdock, in Netflix’s Daredevil series makes him a perfect candidate, which makes sense from a narrative standpoint even without a multiversal plot device.

Despite the slew of merchandise that continues to become available, Spider-Man: No Way Home has yet to get a trailer in anticipation of its December release. Marvel Studios is clearly trying extremely hard to keep any and every plot detail under wraps as the film will supposedly lead into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and have huge implications on the overall MCU. Unfortunately, with the recent rise of COVID-19 cases and the subsequent underperformance of blockbusters like Jungle Cruise and The Suicide Squad, Marvel and Sony might end up delaying the third Spider-Man film. Not only would this once again reset Marvel’s slate but reduce the chances of getting a trailer in the coming weeks down to zero.
