Spider-Man 3 might not be adapting the Spider-Verse concept into the MCU, as the new film may actually be a Sinister Six movie instead. There is a lot of buzz surrounding Marvel and Sony's third Spider-Man installment with Tom Holland's version of the iconic web-slinger. After Spider-Man: Far From Home ended with a massive cliffhanger for Peter, the teenage hero's next task will be to clear his name after Mysterio framed him for murder. But Peter will also have to deal with the fact that his identity has now been outed to the whole world. The untitled sequel is currently filming and some intriguing players have been added to the cast and they're quite familiar to Spidey fans.

Jamie Foxx and Alfred Molina, who played Electro and Doctor Octopus in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 2 respectively, are set to join the MCU film. While it's unclear if they're playing MCU iterations of their characters or the versions they played in the previous films, it seems like the Spider-Verse idea is factored in one way or another. Reports are now also claiming that Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire's Spider-Men are also being eyed to join the Spider-Man sequel. But what is intriguing about Electro and Doctor Octopus being brought in is their roles as members of the Sinister Six.

While it's almost safe to say that Spider-Man 3 is tackling the Spider-Verse, what if it's actually more about the Sinister Six than uniting Spider-Men? The MCU has in the last two films been introducing various members of the Sinister Six, teasing the potential of them all joining forces. With the addition of both Electro and Doctor Octopus, it's not impossible that other past Spider-Man villain actors will be back from the two previous franchises. While it wouldn't be surprising at this point if Holland, Garfield, and Maguire are brought together for a Spider-Verse crossover, Spider-Man 3 is perhaps more of a platform for the Sinister Six to finally make their cinematic debut together.

MCU's Spider-Man 3 Unites Villains From Each Era

While it remains to be seen what kind of Electro and Doctor Octopus fans are getting, Spider-Man 3 is managing to bring foes from each era together in one film. Molina's Otto Octavius has been recognized for over a decade as the strongest Spider-Man foe in Sam Raimi's trilogy. Foxx's Electro had a tricky situation as The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was heavily interfered with by Sony, hence the plot was overall damaged because of it. But regardless of how the sequel did, Foxx is getting another chance to play the electric-based baddie, with the possibility of working side-by-side with Molina's Doctor Octopus.

Even though MCU's Spider-Man franchise hasn't focused heavily on what the previous iterations did, this is a big way to pay tribute to those films. If they play their original versions of those characters, it'd be a huge opportunity for those past franchises to get some recognition. Even though Peter is still the protagonist of the film, Spider-Man 3 could partially be served as a Sinister Six movie at the same time, given the casting reports that are coming in. What would truly help celebrate the honoring of 3 Spider-Man eras in cinema is if one of the MCU Spider-Man foes also joins the party.

Despite the fact that it wouldn't be a shock if Mysterio was still alive, Spider-Man 3 has the opportunity to bring back Michael Keaton's Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming. Since he also knows Spider-Man's real identity, this film would be the natural point for him to return, especially if he joins up with other members of the Sinister Six. He was even the first Spider-Man antagonist in this universe to discover Peter's big secret and he's likely going to have a thing or two to say now that the rest of the world knows it too after Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Doctor Octopus Can Start Marvel's Original Sinister Six Story

Doc Ock on top of a building in Spider-Man 2

For decades in the comics, Doctor Octopus has been crucial to the Sinister Six as he is usually the villain that forms the band of Spidey foes. During the climax of Spider-Man 2, Otto sacrifices himself to pull the fusion reactor down into the ocean. The final shot of him in the movie is him drowning as the reactor keeps sinking. If Molina were to reprise that version of Doctor Octopus that has somehow survived, it would set a foundation for him to create the Sinister Six. But rather than bringing villains together from his world, Otto could have found a way to travel across the Multiverse to bring various versions of Spider-Man's iconic villains together.

The notion that Otto would be determined to target web-slingers across the Multiverse is something that he'd absolutely do if his hatred for Spider-Man is that big. That could be an organic way to re-introduce Foxx's Electro from Marc Webb's universe as his fate was left very ambiguously after his battle with Spider-Man. Even though he was technically defeated, Electro did oddly just disappear, which is an easy way to pick up on that story for Spider-Man 3. Given how intelligent Doctor Octopus is, it would be very easy for him to find a way to restore Electro and get him to join his team.

It'd especially be natural for Otto to be the center figure of the Sinister Six if he is now without his tentacles. The beauty of Doc Ock as a Spider-Man villain is that he is just as dangerous without the tentacles as he is with them. His intelligence is almost in itself a super-power, especially if storylines like Superior Spider-Man are any indication. To imagine any Spider-Man foe other than Doctor Octopus to start the Sinister Six would be an insult to the team as a whole. Given how beloved Molina's take on Doctor Octopus was, it makes more than sense for him to take the spotlight once more, especially if he's putting together the super-villain team.

Spider-Man 3 Can Pay Off Sony's Original Plans

As much investment as Sony Pictures has for the Spider-Verse story, Sinister Six has been a big goal for the studio, going all the way back to The Amazing Spider-Man franchise. One of the reasons why Garfield's second film struggled was because it became more about launching spinoff films rather than tell a good Spider-Man story. Sony wanted to expand that cinematic universe by relying on multiple Spider-Man characters, including members of the Sinister Six. It got to the point where Sony was actually going to make a Sinister Six movie that was initially going to be written and directed by Drew Goddard.

When Sony Pictures had its enormous hack, it went into detail how scrambled all of their plans were for their initial Spider-Man Universe. That's what eventually led Sony and Marvel to make the infamous deal that allowed Peter Parker to join the MCU. However, with Spider-Man 3, the film can actually pay off Sony's desire to get the Sinister Six together on the big screen, in one way or another. Even if it's possibly more angled with the Multiverse as opposed to having six Spider-Man foes from the same universe, they would still be accomplishing a long-time goal as a studio.

It'll likely be quite a while before Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios reveal what is and isn't happening in the third untitled Spider-Man movie. But what's a guarantee is that this is going to be the biggest Spider-Man sequel ever made in the web crawler's entire cinematic history. Since they only recently started filming, there is still enough time left for there to be more surprises revealed, whether it's through announcements or even set photos/videos. As filming continues until next year, more details will likely continue to emerge about what fans can expect to see in Spider-Man 3 and, seemingly, the formation of the Sinister Six in the MCU.
