A new image from the set of Spider-Man: No Way Home reveals New York City's Statue of Liberty holding Captain America's shield. The iconic weapon is currently a narrative focal point in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but it may also play an important role in the upcoming Jon Watts and Tom Holland threequel.
Production for No Way From Home began late 2020 after a series of delays due to the coronavirus pandemic and has just recently wrapped up. Still, Marvel Studios remains very secretive about the project; while the title and a few promo stills for the blockbuster have been released, not much is known about its plot. There was an assumption that it would simply tackle the aftermath of Spider-Man: Far From Home, but that may be the case as persistent rumors claim that it will be a live-action version attempt on Spider-Verse. Jamie Foxx is reportedly reprising his role as Max Dillon/Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, while previous actors who once inhabited the role in Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are also rumored to appear. But arguably the most telling piece of information about the project thus far is that it's confirmed to connect to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
While principal photography has already wrapped up for No Way Home, several set props have yet to be removed including a made-up Queens bus signage that shows the Statue of Liberty wielding Captain America's shield. Shared on Twitter by @blockbustedpod (via Spider-Man: No Way Home News), it also dubs the iconic sculpture to be "NYC's NEWEST AVENGER." Check out the photos below:
Based on the known MCU timeline, it's safe to say that the events of No Way Home will take place after what goes down in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier which prominently features the shield as it explores the legacy of the Captain America mantle. After Sam gave it to the government supposedly for display at the Smithsonian, it was eventually handed to John Walker who's been chosen as the next Star-Spangled Avenger. There's an idea that at the end of the show, Sam will claim his rightful place as Steve's successor; assuming that this is the case, it's curious how it connects to this image — if at all. In any case, this is an indication that months after the events of Avengers: Endgame, the MCU public continues to celebrate Earth's Mightiest Heroes; for what it's worth, the Avengers was once based in NYC.
With principal photography finished, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment can start to market Spider-Man: No Way Home sooner rather than later. However, with three more films in the MCU docket before it, chances are that the focus will be on those for now. Still, that shouldn't stop them from releasing any additional information about the threequel as it doesn't even have an official premise yet.
