Spider-Man 3 Set Photo Hints The Avengers Are Still Active In Phase 4

A new image from the set of Spider-Man: No Way Home hints that the Avengers are still active in MCU Phase 4. Avengers: Endgame brought together all corners of the universe as the heroes worked together to defeat Thanos and his minions. While they succeeded in their endeavor, their win also came with a string of farewells to some of the original Earth's Mightiest Heroes with both Iron Man and Black Widow sacrificing their lives for the greater good, Captain America deciding it's time to retire, and Vision having been killed in the previous movie.

This has left Thor, Hulk, and Hawkeye from the original Avengers lineup, with Scarlet Witch, War Machine, Falcon, and Spider-Man from the extended roster. But as revealed in Spider-Man: Far From Home and what's been revealed in Phase 4 thus far, each one of them is busy attending to personal matters. Peter Parker, for example, was forced to deal with Mysterio, who attempted to steal Iron Man's E.D.I.T.H., before Peter's identity as Spider-Man was put on public blast by J. Jonah Jameson While there's no word yet for when the Avengers will re-assemble as the MCU is currently in a transition period, a new photo from No Way From Home's set implies that Earth's Mightiest Heroes are still in operation.

Principal photography for the Jon Watts threequel has recently wrapped up, but prop remnants from filming have yet to be fully cleared out, resulting in an interesting fake Queens sign that reveals New York City's Statue of Liberty carrying Captain America's shield and is dubbed "NYC's NEWEST AVENGER." Considering that Far From Home takes place several months after Endgame, it's safe to say that the events of No Way Home are set just about a year since Thanos was defeated, and in conjunction, so is that aforementioned sign. So while WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which both take place before Far From Home, don't refer to the Avengers as a functioning unit, No Way Home implies that the superhero team remains in existence. It's likely a propaganda sign referring to John Walker, the newest Captain America, so if nothing else, the Avengers as a concept is still something that's at the forefront of public consciousness since it's being used in PR material.

This may not be a clue that Earth's Mightiest Heroes will reconvene in the near future. Looking at MCU's current lineup, the franchise is stacked with both big and small screen endeavors, and it's difficult to insert a film as pivotal as Avengers 5 into the mix. For what it's worth, Marvel Studios is making it up by coming out with smaller ensemble movies such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder. Still, considering that the New York government is using the Avengers, not to mention Captain America's shield, as PR symbols, this means that the MCU heroes are still renowned and viewed positively by the public. This is an interesting juxtaposition to Spider-Man's status in No Way From Home as he's being framed for the death of Mysterio.

When the Avengers will reassemble again is unknown at this point. There has to be a justified reason for them to get back together, especially considering that three of their primary mainstays in Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Widow are no longer in the MCU to recruit all the other members. However, they will certainly be back as a unit once another formidable foe arrives. For now, everyone is dealing with their own personal issues including Peter in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
