Spider-Man: Homecoming left some loose threads that the sequel failed to address, but Spider-Man: No Way Home can go back to them and set up something bigger, specifically when it comes to Scorpion and the formation of the Dark Avengers. Thanks to the deal between Sony and Marvel, Spider-Man was finally able to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it all began in 2016 with Captain America: Civil War when Peter Parker was recruited by Tony Stark to join his side of the battle. The web-slinger returned in his first solo movie, Spider-Man: Homecoming, in 2017, and has since taken part in some important battles.

Spider-Man: Homecoming not only introduced the audience to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, but also to villains that could easily set up some supervillain teams, as are Adrian Toomes/Vulture (Michael Keaton), Herman Schultz/Shocker (Bokeem Woodbine), and Mac Gargan/Scorpion (Michael Mando). Contrary to what always happens with villains in the MCU, these three antagonists made it through their debut movie, and they all ended up in jail. Vulture is set to appear in Sony’s Morbius, thus connecting both universes, but Shocker and Scorpion haven’t been seen again, not even in Spider-Man: Far From Home, but the third Spider-Man movie is one big chance to use Scorpion and through him set up a new team.

Plot details about Spider-Man: No Way Home are still a mystery, but this might be the last chance to address some of those loose threads left by the previous movies, especially the one involving Scorpion. In the mid-credits scene of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Gargan came across Toomes in prison and told him about his (and others’) plans of revenge against the web-slinger, letting him know that he heard Toomes knew who Spider-Man is, which he denied. That was the last time viewers saw Scorpion in the MCU, but the character’s comic book history has the best solution for his big-screen version: the Dark Avengers.

Scorpion in Spider-Man Homecoming

The Dark Avengers made their debut in 2009 and it’s a team whose members are villains disguised as established superheroes, and the first team included Gargan as none other than Spider-Man. Now, speculation about the Dark Avengers coming soon to the MCU have gained force after the introduction of Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and she being the one behind John Walker’s (Wyatt Russell) new identity as U.S. Agent, which has made fans think she will be the one behind the formation of the Dark Avengers, serving as their version of Nick Fury. Back to Spider-Man: No Way Home, what is known is that it will deal with the multiverse, which will be explored more in-depth in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and if other versions of the web-slinger make an appearance, it would be easier for Gargan to steal the identity of Spider-Man and be part of the Dark Avengers.

This would be a much better way to go back to the character and give him a bigger purpose than just dealing with him in the first 10 minutes of the movie just so the story can move forward and away from him. With the original Avengers team now over and the New Avengers scattered and taking care of their own businesses, the Dark Avengers seem like the best addition there can be to the MCU, and if Gargan doesn’t take part in The Sinister Six as many have hoped, he can easily have a place with the Dark Avengers.
