Marvel Studios should stop making Spider-Man an Avenger in Spider-Man 3 and convert into a Defender. Ever since he was introduced into the bigger MCU world in Captain America: Civil War, Peter Parker had always strived to be one of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. That said, it would be best for his arc if he becomes a member of the Defenders instead.

Brought in by Tony Stark for Team Iron Man in Civil War, Spider-Man had a pathway to becoming an Avenger by being associated with one of the team's leaders. After helping in the airport battle in Germany, Peter's whole arc in Spider-Man: Homecoming is to prove himself worthy of a spot in the Avengers. He took on Vulture by himself, which impressed Tony, ultimately convincing him that the young hero was ripe to be in the big leagues. Surprising both of them, however, Peter turned down the offer and decided to become a friendly neighborhood hero for a while.

That being said, it was only a matter of time before Spider-Man became an Avenger. Due to it being an all-hands-on-deck situation as Thanos threatened the universe in Avengers: Infinity War, Iron Man knighted Peter as an official member of the Avengers on their way to Titan to confront the purple villain. With two years of gained experience as a street-level hero since Homecoming, Peter finally felt ready to accept the responsibility. Now that Iron Man is dead and the Infinity Saga is done, however, Marvel Studios needs to bring him back to his street-level roots which will make him more suitable to be a Defender rather than an Avenger.

While Peter spent time operating as NYC's local Spider-Man in between the events of Homecoming and Infinity War, that whole arc happened off-screen. So it's unclear how exactly he functioned as a street-level hero, which is such an integral part of his arc in the comics. It's understandable that Marvel Studios wanted him to have ties to the Avengers as he was being incorporated into the MCU, but at the end of the day, Spider-Man should be his own hero. Crossovers are great, but in his own adventures like in the upcoming Spider-Man 3, he should get back to basics by fighting Earth-bound villains who threaten his community rather than fighting aliens and interdimensional threats to the galaxy and even reality itself. By making Spider-Man a Defender, he can focus his operations in New York City in the same way Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist did in Marvel's Netflix universe.

Given the mounting evidence that Spider-Man 3 will be Marvel Studios' attempt at a live-action Spider-Verse it might be tricky to pull this off. That said, Spider-Man: Far From Home also set up a great narrative that could lean on this idea. At the end of the 2019 film, Spider-Man's real identity was outed when he was framed for the death of Mysterio thanks to the broadcast of a heavily-edited video released by J. Jonah Jameson. It's curious if this arc will still be tackled in the threequel considering the recent casting additions for the film, but it could be a great way to ground Spider-Man after his galactic adventures in the Infinity Saga.
