The MCU's third Spider-Man film is officially called Spider-Man: No Way Home - and there's a subtle meaning behind it. Over the last few years, studios have managed to turn title reveals into something of an event. Nobody will ever be able to equal the hype surrounding the title reveal of Avengers: Endgame, but everyone's gotten in on the act, sometimes with amusing results.

Take, for example, the title reveal of Marvel and Sony's Spider-Man 3. It was a foregone conclusion this would have "Home" in it - the last two films having been Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, respectively. Then, cast began to troll fans with possible Spider-Man 3 titles, implicitly acknowledging the truth would soon be revealed. That implicit promise was swiftly fulfilled, with the studios releasing a hilarious video in which actors Tom Holland, Jacob Batalan, and Zendaya complained at not knowing the film title - and walked past a whiteboard confirming it. Spider-Man 3, Tom Holland's sixth movie in the MCU, is officially called Spider-Man: No Way Home.

This likely reflects Peter Parker's status quo in the movie, as a fugitive from justice. Spider-Man: Far From Home ended with Spider-Man's secret identity being revealed to the world, and worse still he was framed both for Mysterio's murder and a spate of terrorist attacks across Europe. Spider-Man: No Way Home is clearly set several months later at least, given set photos have suggested a Christmas setting. Thus Spider-Man has probably been on the run for months now, a wanted man, and it's even possible the recently released official Spider-Man 3 images show where Peter has been crashing.

But there may well be a deeper meaning to the title, because where Peter encountered a charlatan who was lying about the Multiverse in Spider-Man: Far From Home, in the threequel he's expected to web-swing his way into the real deal. Marvel has already confirmed Spider-Man 3 will tie into Doctor Strange 2, complete with a prominent role for Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange. What's more, there have been frequent reports past actors to play Spider-Man - notably Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield - are in this film as well. If so, then it's possible Tom Holland's wall-crawler will find himself lost in the Multiverse, struggling to figure out how to get back home.

One thing's for sure, though; the title of Spider-Man 3 probably won't reflect the reality of Peter Parker's experience, but rather what he fears is the case - that the dramatic changes in his life are irreversible, and that there is no way home. But countless villains have learned never to count Spider-Man out, and with the help of Doctor Strange, he's sure to find a way to defy the odds. In an ironic twist, that may well mean Spider-Man: No Way Home ends with a literal "homecoming" - which would be so very appropriate.
