The untitled Spider-Man 3 film may be delayed, star Tom Holland says. Director Jon Watts is set to finish his MCU trilogy after helming Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home. Plot details are still scant at the moment and from what it looks like, it might be a while before fans can learn anything about the project since its release date may be delayed.

Last year, there was a brief separation between Disney/Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment that almost pulled Spider-Man from the MCU. Instead, he would join Sony's budding superhero franchise with Venom and Morbius. Fortunately, the studios were able to hash it out, coming out with a brand new agreement that would allow Holland's Peter Parker to star in two more MCU films - one standalone and another in an ensemble one. Not longer after this, it was announced that Spider-Man 3 is set to release next summer with production scheduled to begin this July. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, it may no longer be the case.

Holland appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to catch up with host Jimmy Kimmel about what he's been up to during the quarantine. He was inevitably asked about the status of Spider-Man 3's schedule and the actor candidly said that at this point, he's not sure what's going to happen. In any case, he added that he's ready to suit back up for the role whenever they're cleared to begin production.

“I’m not too sure. I was in Berlin, making a film called Uncharted with Mark Wahlberg. And we were all ready to go, we went to set for day one of shooting, and then we got shut down and we got sent home. So whether we shoot that movie first or we shoot Spider-Man first, I’m unclear. But I don’t know. But both movies are being made and they’re both really strong and the scripts are fantastic, so whatever happens, happens. But I’m ready to play both. I mean I played Spider-Man enough, now I could play him tomorrow, so it’s ready to go.”

Marvel Studios has already pushed their entire Phase 4 movie slate back with Black Widow (originally releasing this May) delayed until November. This had a domino effect for the rest of their projects with some being delayed a couple of months. They remain mum about the status of their upcoming TV shows for Disney+ - with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision at the tail end of their production. Marvel Studios couldn't really announce what  would happen with Spider-Man 3 since that's in collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment, although considering the fact that they've also pushed back the releases for Morbius and Venom: Let There Be Carnage, chances are that the untitled Holland-led threequel will eventually follow suit.

Whether or not Spider-Man 3's schedule will hold solely depends on how the global health crisis due to coronavirus will shake out. At this point, some countries are doing better at handling it than others, but this should be a collective effort from all nations since it's highly contagious and breakouts can happen in an instant. Considering how packed 2021 is already with regard to blockbusters after most summer films this year were re-scheduled to next year, there's really no rush in coming out with the threequel in its original schedule.
