Spider-Man 3 will include Doctor Strange and, reportedly, Daredevil too, but it’s Matt Murdock that is more important to the sequel than Stephen Strange. The next installment in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man franchise is gearing up to be one of the biggest MCU sequels that have ever been made. Not only does the third film pick-up on the massive cliffhanger in Spider-Man: Far From Home, but it looks like there may be some Spider-Verse plot going down too. The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s Jamie Foxx and Spider-Man 2’s Alfred Molina are getting a second go at playing the villainous Electro and Doctor Octopus. It has also been reported that Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire is coming back as their respective versions of the Marvel web-slinger.

However, the cast expansion doesn’t seem to be stopping there as another huge Marvel player is reportedly being added too. Charlie Cox, who portrayed Matt Murdock a.k.a. Daredevil in the Netflix-Marvel drama, is supposedly set to join the MCU project as the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. With the ongoing #SaveDaredevil campaign pushing forward as of late, it seems that Daredevil fans will indeed get to see Cox back in the red-armored suit. Besides the reported additions of two other Spider-Men, Daredevil marks as the second MCU hero to join the untitled sequel. Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange will be playing a part in the story, perhaps being the reason for how Spider-Verse happens.

A major theory about Cumberbatch’s involvement is that Doctor Strange will be crucial to Peter’s current identity arc after Mysterio exposed Spider-Man’s real name to the public while framing him for murder. However, as imperative as that would be, Daredevil’s potential role in Spider-Man 3 is actually more important than Doctor Strange’s potential part to play. While Matt is a formidable hero, he plays another powerful role in the MCU as a lawyer. Now that Peter will literally have to face the world, Matt serving as his lawyer would be a key element to the story in order to help him clear his name.

If that is the role that Cox’s character has in the plot, it would be a solid and organic way to find a solution to the issue that Spider-Man: Far From Home set up. As fun and as rewarding as it’d be to potentially see Cox appearing in an MCU film as his character, it would also serve a great purpose for this arc. Rather than undoing it via time-travel, it would allow the MCU to take a much-grounded approach to solve Peter’s identity storyline. This can also pave the way for Peter to gain a new relationship with another superhero in the MCU, especially one that lives in his city.

Given how popular Cox’s Daredevil has become, it makes sense for Marvel Studios to capitalize on one of the biggest resources to come out of Marvel TV’s era through The Defenders. If Cox can return, it would also open the door for other characters from the Marvel-Netflix franchise to appear in the MCU such as Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones and Mike Colter’s Luke Cage. Only time will tell if Cox’s Daredevil is finally taking part in the larger MCU as Marvel and Sony have yet to confirm or debunk the latest report. But if Daredevil is indeed joining Spider-Man 3, it will be one of the best calls for that franchise and the MCU as a whole.
