Dane DeHaan squashed the rumors that he would be returning as Green Goblin in the forthcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 film. Despite some earlier conflicts between Sony and Marvel that nearly ended the MCU’s Spider-Man run, the upcoming untitled third installment in the MCU’s Spider-Man franchise will give Tom Holland his third go at portraying the classic web-slinging hero. Jon Watts is returning to direct alongside returning producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal.

Dane DeHaan originally played the infamous villain in Sony’s 2014 film The Amazing Spider-Man 2, directed by Marc Webb and starring Andrew Garfield as the titular hero. When it was announced that Jamie Foxx would be reprising his role as Electro from the same film, fans began to speculate about DeHaan’s Green Goblin's possible return. Green Goblin, one of the most well-known Spider-Man villains, is a fan favorite due to his engaging backstory as Peter Parker’s friend Harry Osborn who slowly (following the footsteps of his father, Norman Osborn) turns into Spider-Man’s most prominent archenemy (with him, it’s not just business, it's personal). James Franco also played the character in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire.

During press with RadioTimes for his upcoming crime drama television show ZeroZeroZero, Dane DeHaan shot down any rumors of his involvement in the upcoming Spider-Man film. While conceding that he would enjoy doing another movie like The Amazing Spider-Man 2 again, he harbors some confusion about the trajectory of the current Spider-Man franchise, stating, “I don’t even know how that would be pulled off.” He also commented about the rumors on his Twitter account by sharing a story about his denial and asking fans to "tell my mom so she can stop asking about this."

“There’s no truth to those rumors. I don’t even know how that would be pulled off. I would certainly love to make some kind of movie like that again. I like making superhero movies or in that kind of world and I’m sure I’ll find myself in that world again. And I have no idea what they’re doing with the Spider-Man movies now, but I don’t really understand a world in which that would be possible.”

Bringing back DeHaan's Green Goblin isn't impossible considering both Jamie Foxx and Alfred Molina are reprising their roles as Electro and Doc Ock from the Andrew Garfield and Toby Maguire Spider-Man series, respectively. Given their presence in the upcoming film, Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 could further explore the multiverse - more affectionately named the spider-verse after the 2018 Oscar-winning animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Although not a part of the MCU, Spider-Verse more intimately explored Spider-Man’s relationship with the multiverse. Further evidence of Homecoming 3 exploring the multiverse is the confirmed presence of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange in the film—Doctor Strange was the first MCU film to establish the multiverse's existence outright.

While there is excitement about the possibilities the multiverse provides—like getting to see favorite actors reprise their roles as favorite characters—multiverse storylines are notoriously tricky to navigate, making the stories more prone to plot-hole inconsistencies. This makes the introduction of the multiverse risky, but also with the potential for great reward. Although this rumor may not have been true, what is certain is that Spider-Man fans are in for a lot more surprises and nostalgia with Spider-Man: Homecoming 3.
