New Spider-Man 3 set images may be teasing the return of the Iron Spider suit. First appearing at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming, it wasn't until Avengers: Infinity War that Peter Parker would don the armor during his and the other New York-based heroes' trip to Titan to confront Thanos.

Not much is known about the plot specifics of the untitled Spider-Man 3 film at this point. After the clear set-up at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, it appears as if it's not going to be a direct continuation of that narrative, with the threequel now confirmed to connect to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While Benedict Cumberbatch has yet to be confirmed for the project, there have been persistent rumors that he is reprising his role as the MCU's future sorcerer supreme in the blockbuster. Meanwhile, Jamie Foxx is reportedly reprising Max Dillon aka Electro from 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Previous actors who played the role like Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are also rumored to appear, as well as Charlie Cox's version of Matthew Murdock/Daredevil.

Assuming these pan out, Spider-Man 3 will be more of a multiverse narrative than a straightforward sequel to Far From Home, but the project may still be continuing plot threads from its predecessor. As revealed in new set images shared on Twitter by fan-account Spider-Man 3 Updates, Tom Holland's stunt double is wearing a mo-cap suit, hinting that the hero may be putting the Iron Spider armor back on in the movie. It's worth noting that the actor has mostly worn practical costumes in the MCU, except for when he donned his Infinity War-ensemble. Check out the images below:

It's difficult to gauge what's happening given the lack of context for these images, but it's worth noting that Peter still owns the Iron Spider suit despite getting a new one in Far From Home. He mostly wore the advanced costume at the start of the movie, but he left it in New York during his Europe trip with the rest of his class. It's unknown why he would re-wear it again in the MCU since he has the one he made himself, but considering the Iron Spider suit is supposed to be his most-advanced costume to date, it makes sense that he would be opting for it if he's hunted down or dealing with the multiverse in the threequel. Otherwise, it's also possible that this is for an entirely different suit since Marvel Studios tends to give their characters an updated look every time they appear in a new film.

But assuming that this is really the Iron Spider suit, it's curious how prominent it will be in Spider-Man 3. As it is, critics have already been harping on Marvel Studios' decision to tie Peter Parker's arc in the MCU to Iron Man. The argument is, this essentially makes him so heavily dependent on his mentor that he barely has his own identity in the franchise. Perhaps like in Far From Home, the hero only wears the armor briefly; there's also the possibility that it could be for a flashback sequence. Either way, for as cool as the Iron Spider suit is, it'd be much cooler to see Peter in his own style.
