Kevin Smith shares a rumor that Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) from Netflix's Daredevil will appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Spider-Man 3 before spinning off into his own movie. Back in Phase 2 of the MCU, the TV side of Marvel launched various spinoffs from the main movie franchise, including Netflix's whole New York City-set mini-universe that kicked off in 2015 with Daredevil. Many of the TV shows associated with the MCU have since been cancelled as Marvel Studios moves into Phase 4 and plans to launch their own TV side of the franchise. For its part, Daredevil was canceled after season 3, though fans have hoped to see Cox reprise his role elsewhere in the MCU.

As for the sequel to Spider-Man: Far From Home, there was some uncertainty last summer about whether the film would happen as part of the MCU since Marvel Studios and Sony had trouble negotiating a new deal to share the webslinger. Eventually, the companies managed to reach an agreement, keeping Spider-Man in the MCU and announcing Spider-Man 3 will release in 2021. Though the plot of the movie is unknown, it would presumably follow on from the Far From Home post-credits scene in which Peter Parker's (Tom Holland) secret identity was revealed and Spider-Man was framed for killing Mysterio. Now, filmmaker and comic book movie super-fan Kevin Smith has revealed a rumor he heard about the MCU film.

Speaking about upcoming Marvel movies on his Fatman Beyond podcast, Smith revealed he heard a rumor Marvel will bring in Cox's Matt Murdock aka Daredevil for Spider-Man 3. By day, Murdock is a lawyer, and it's this version of the character it seems Smith believes will be in the movie - before Daredevil is spun out into his own movie. Smith said:

I heard another piece of good f-ckin' news. Did You hear that Spider-Man, the new Spider-Man movie, gonna have a lawyer in it? … Charlie Cox, they're bringing in as Matt Murdock. That's been the rumor online and they say that's like the one that like Marvel's like god damn it how did that get out?

After the podcast, Smith clarified the rumor on Twitter, saying he doesn't have any inside info about Spider-Man 3 or Daredevil's inclusion. See his tweet below.

It's unclear where Smith heard this rumor, but his excitement about the prospect of Daredevil joining the film side of the MCU is no doubt shared by fans of Cox's version of the character. However, it's unclear if it's actually possible for Daredevil to appear in Spider-Man 3 from a rights perspective. When Netflix first cancelled Daredevil and its other Marvel TV shows, it was reported the streamer would still retain control of the characters for two years. Since the shows were cancelled in late 2018, that means Marvel can't use Daredevil until later this year. So depending on when Spider-Man 3 starts production - and whether Marvel is able to work something out with Netflix - the character may not be able to join the movie.

That said, Netflix has worked out deals in the past that allowed their properties to continue elsewhere, like One Day at a Time moving to Pop TV. So it's certainly possible Marvel has worked something out with Netflix in order to use Daredevil in Spider-Man 3. And if that's true, Smith is no doubt right that Marvel is angry the secret got out, since the movie studio is well-known for keeping surprise character appearances close to their vest. Still, it's unclear how much truth there is to this particular rumor even if Smith seems to believe it's true. We won't know for sure until Marvel confirms Daredevil is in Spider-Man 3 - or, more likely, fans see the movie for themselves.
