Eighty years from today, the world of superheroes will finally reach Marvel 2099. To celebrate that fact, Marvel has launched a brand new event bearing the title, beginning with Spider-Man 2099 coming back in time in search of help. When he finally made contact with his target, Peter Parker, the spider-Man of the future made it clear: the entire future is at stake. But now fans may have to wonder if this Spider-Man 2099 is the one they've always known, or something new.

Spider-Man 2099 started the event in spectacular fashion, before delivering his desperate message to Peter and dissolving into nothingness. Not long after, Marvel confirmed to readers that the days of Marvel 2099 being one 'possible' future are over. The Marvel 2099 universe is THE future of Marvel Comics, and the timeline in which all current adventures are set. So now that Spider-Man 2099 #1 is being previewed by Marvel directly... why is the future already changing from the version fans knew before?

For those who already know the story of Miguel O'Hara, the Alchemax employee turned Spider-Man, this one-shot has been a long awaited treat (after already getting to see him kick off an entire universe-threatening event). The preview pages begin before Miguel's transformation, when he was still dutifully working for Alchemax, and turning a blind eye to the more horrifying truths existing on the other side of the microscope or mutant genome. In fact, the preview pages seem to show Miguel's first run-in with mutated spiders. There's just one problem: this doesn't actually match perfectly with the origin for Miguel O'Hara fans have always know. See for yourselves:

Perhaps it's too early to suggest that Marvel is retelling the origin story of Miguel O'Hara, giving him a futuristic, body horror, science-fiction version of Peter Parker's own run-in with radioactive spiders -- as opposed to the blended genome experiments executed against Miguel's will of the original version. Since it's not entirely clear if this Spider-Man 2099 is the same as the previous Spider-Man 2099, or how this rewriting may relate to Miguel's fading from reality, fans can only speculate. But not for long, since the full issue arrives on December 11th. Find the full issue details and plot synopsis below:
