This article contains spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #49.

Spider-Gwen - the hero who now goes by "Ghost Spider" - has proved she is the perfect successor for Peter Parker's Spider-Man. He may be best known as "Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man," but the wall-crawler is actually Earth-616's own Spider-Totem, serving a role dictated by the mystical Web of Life and Destiny. There must always be a Spider-Totem in every reality, and Spider-Man has refused to step down and let others take on his role.

But being a Spider-Totem is a high-risk occupation, and Peter has increasingly found himself haunted by the possibility of his own death. He's being stalked by a sinister being called Kindred, who knows his secret identity and is even able to haunt Spider-Man's dreams, and in Amazing Spider-Man #49 he's brought into conflict once again with the Green Goblin. With the pressure building, Spider-Man is beginning to think about how long he'll last, and who should replace him as the next Spider-Totem. He's chosen Miles Morales - but that looks to have been the wrong call. Amazing Spider-Man #49 proves Ghost Spider is the one who truly deserves to be Peter Parker's successor.

Kindred appears to possess the ability to manipulate the Web of Life and Destiny, and as a result, he's taunted the other spider-characters with visions of Peter Parker dying at the hands of the Green Goblin. His goal appears to be to take Norman Osborn off the table using his pawn the Sin-Eater and in order to do that he needs to manipulate the spiders into stopping Spider-Man getting in the way. And he comes within a hair's breadth of success - until Ghost Spider steps in.

Spider-Gwen and Spider-Man Family

All the spider-family are motivated by love for Spider-Man, but Ghost Spider is the only one who believes he has the right to make his own decisions - no matter the cost. The others have all attempted to change Spider-Man's mind, but they haven't been willing to listen to him, to recognize the pain he wrestles with. And so Ghost Spider argues the spiders have to give Peter Parker their blessing, not their opposition. He needs their support, not an intervention. It's notable that she also proves herself a leader in this moment because she persuades the others to come round to her view. That's all the more remarkable given she was talking around experienced heroes like Jessica Drew's Spider-Woman and the precognitive Madame Web.

Though Ghost-Spider does not know it, she has just thrown a serious spanner in the works for Kindred. His entire gambit was aimed at using his pawns to take out Norman Osborn, but Gwen has forced him to intervene personally, and by the end of the issue Kindred and the Green Goblin are facing off against one another. This is the first real setback Kindred's plans have suffered - and it's all because Ghost-Spider stepped up, proving herself the rightful successor to Spider-Man.
