Wanring: contains spoilers for The Amazing Spider-Man #61!

Peter Parker, aka the Amazing Spider-Man is making a lot of questionable decisions lately, and among them is an attempt to rip off the X-Men for some quick cash. Recently, faced with the gigantic monster Gog, Spider-Man and his reformed super-villain roommate Boomerang managed to persuade the creature to shrink down and become their house pet. But as Gog eats them out of house and home, the two settle on a plan to turn Gog into the next Lockheed.

First appearing in Chris Claremont and Paul Smith’s Uncanny X-Men #166, Lockheed made his debut helping the X-Men fight off a parasitic race of aliens known as the Brood. He joined up with the mutants quickly thereafter, becoming a longtime member of the team and forming a strong bond with the young Kate Pryde, who now leads mutant team the Marauders. The dragon-like extraterrestrial is a great ally in battle, but more than that, he's an incredibly popular animal sidekick recognized by fans the world over.

The Amazing Spider-Man #61, by Nick Spencer, Patrick Gleason, and Edgar Delgado picks up a little way into Peter Parker's adventures as a pet owner. Given Gog’s destructive tendencies, house training him hasn’t been easy on Pete, but Boomerang seems to think they can make some easy money by posting pictures of the little beast on social media. Fred even tells Peter that Gog could end up as “the next Lockheed.” Of course, Spidey is skeptical of his roomie’s idea, as they’ve only made a little bit of cash from sponsorships thus far, but Boomerang’s statement could still come true in some other ways.

There are already a few similarities between Lockheed and Gog that help Boomerang’s point hit home. Both are extraterrestrials who can do some serious damage in a battle, and they were both taken in by superheroes as well. The X-Men, however, tend to embrace their differences from the rest of society, especially now that they have their own nation, so having a pet dragon is pretty par for the course. Spider-Man, on the other hand, generally tries to keep his day-to-day personal life fairly normal, so taking in an alien as a pet is an unusual choice - so unusual that it's likely building to a significant role in Spencer's overall narrative.

Lockheed-and-Gog

Given that Gog was able to take on Spider-Man and Boomerang with relative ease, there’s a pretty high likelihood that he can face off with most of the Web-Slinger’s rogues as well. He also responds fairly positively to kindness, so Peter’s general personality will likely increase Gog’s loyalty as they grow closer, even if the creature isn't exactly bringing in the big bucks. The only thing really standing in the way of Gog and Spider-Man having their own partnership a la Kate and Lockheed is training, but Spider-Man’s pulled off plenty of impossible accomplishments over the years. Either way, the X-Men may want to watch out, because Lockheed isn’t the cutest pet alien in the superhero game anymore.
