A new trailer for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has revealed that some classic villains from the Spider-Man universe will show up as adversaries in the new animated film. The new trailer premiered at CinemaCon 2018 (an industry event releasing footage to audience members mostly comprised of theater owners), revealing some villain-specific tidbits for Spider-Man fans.
Not to be confused with Marvel Studio's Spider-Man series, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse follows Brooklyn teenager Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) as he embraces his new abilities as the web-slinger, only to discover that he's not the only Spider-Man in New York City. The first trailer for the animated feature, which debuted last December, teased the bright and stylistic visual flair from directors Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman, and Robert Persichetti Jr., but the latest trailer swings deeper into the plot - even revealing the fact that some classic Spider-Man villains will be in the film, including one of the wall-crawler's archenemies Norman Osborne (aka the Green Goblin).

In the new trailer, it's revealed that Miles Morales is taking over the Spider-Man role after Peter Parker is killed in action at the hands of the Green Goblin. He dons the suit, takes the name, and proceeds to do battle against Parker's former foes. However, it's not just the Green Goblin who has it out for Morales. He will also be facing off against Kingpin and the Prowler (though there may well be other villain reveals being saved for the film itself). What's more, the Green Goblin from the trailer is visually more aligned with the Ultimate character design, given the more literal goblin appearance, so it will be interesting to see what other Ultimate series designs and potential story arcs they borrow as well.
While it's unclear who will be voicing the villains in Into the Spider-Verse, the current voice cast suggests that a high pedigree of talent will likely be involved. Aside from Moore voicing Morales, Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali will voice Morales' father, New Girl's Jake Johnson will voice Peter Parker, and Liev Schreiber will also lend his voice, though his character hasn't yet been revealed.
While the details regarding trailer footage for Into the Spider-Verse are sparse, the news that classic Spider-Man villains will be playing a role is an exciting revelation. Given the fact that this particular universe is more or less a mystery to audiences, playing with the concept that anyone can be Spider-Man, it was unclear how (or even if) familiar villains would play a role - or if screenwriter Phil Lord was simply jumping into completely new territory. At the very least, there will evidently be plenty of Spider-Man characters in this go-around to warrant a fair fight.
