Spider-Man Reboot Casts Curt Connors' Son & Flash Thompson

Once upon a time director Sam Raimi and actor Tobey Maguire were two of the major players in the Spider-Man franchise. However, earlier this year Sony announced it was giving the franchise the reboot treatment, less than a decade after the series first kicked off in 2002.

Instead of a sequel to Spider-Man 3, we're getting a completely new version of Spidey on film, with rising star Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) in the role of everyone's favorite web-slinger and director Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) behind the camera.

The casting for the Spider-Man reboot has been rolling in fast, with the most recent casting being that of Campbell Scott and Julianne Nicholson as Peter Parker's parents, and Irrfan Khan (Slumdog Millionaire) playing a new villain named Van Atter. Now we're hearing word that two more roles have been filled for the Spider-Man reboot: Curt Connors' son and Peter Parker's high school bully.

First up, SuperHeroHype has learned from its sources that young newcomer Miles Elliot has been cast as Billy Connors, who of course is the son of Dr. Curt Conners/The Lizard (being played by Rhys Ifans) and his wife, Ruth. Elliott only has a few credits to his name (all from this year), the most recent of which was a small role in an episode of Grey's Anatomy last month.

The Wrap is exclusively reporting that actor Chris Zylka has been cast as Flash Thompson, the high school bully who torments Peter Parker (replacing Joe Manganiello, who played the part in Raimi's Spidey movies). He is the typical high school football player/jock who picks on "Puny Peter," but is coincidentally a big fan of Spider-Man. I would like to see that undoubtedly smug smile wiped off Flash's face if and when he finds out Parker and Spider-Man are one and the same :-) .

Zylka has appeared in quite a few things over the last couples of years, including the TV series 10 Things I Hate About You and the sci-fi comedy Kaboom. He has just finished filming an Untitled 3D Shark Thriller from director David R. Ellis (Snakes on a Plane). Personally, I don't see anything wrong either Zylka or Elliot's casting - they both certainly have the look for their respective parts.

The cast of the Spider-Man reboot is shaping up nicely. The film already stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone (check out the first set pics of Stone as Gwen Stacy if you missed them), Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Irrfan Khan, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Julianne Nicholson and Annie Parisse. Add Marc Webb to that list - an unusual but inspired choice - and I'm very much looking forward to this new iteration of Spider-Man.

The Spider-Man reboot recently started shooting and is set to swing into 3D and regular theaters on July 3rd, 2012.
