There have been seven live-action Spider-Man movies in total, with Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland all taking on the role of New York City's favorite bug. And throughout that time there have been plenty of villains, too, with Peter Parker always pushed to the absolute limit when it comes to saving both the city and people he loves.

We now rank all the bad guys that Spidey has gone up against, starting with the worst before getting the best...

Rhino

The Rhino rampages through a city in The Amazing Spider-Man 2

When you think of the villains of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, you probably think about Dane Dehaan's Green Goblin and Jamie Fox's Electro. And that's most likely because you've put Paul Giamatti's Rhino to the very back of your mind.

Giamatti pops up fleetingly as Aleksei Sytsevich early in the blockbuster in a scene meant to be funny - but the comedy aspects fall flat. And his Rhino suit at the very end is, simply put, a travesty. He was meant to return for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 but maybe it's a good thing that that movie never got made.

Jackson Brice

There are two Shockers in Spider-Man: Homecoming. And the first of those, Jackson Brice, comes in as the second most-lame character on this list.

Brice is absolutely useless considering the amazing technology he has at his disposal and is mercilessly killed off by Michael Keaton's Vulture when his decision to experiment with high-profile weaponry nearly backfires. He couldn't say he didn't see it coming, having riled Adrian Toomes throughout the film up until that point.

The Lizard

Rhys Ifans is a popular actor having played interesting characters in movies such as Notting Hill, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and Mr Nice.

But, as the Lizard, it just didn't work. The character's plan - to turn New York City's entire population into reptiles - was ridiculous too. While The Amazing Spider-Man was a good blockbuster, it's a flimsy plot and poor villain stopped it from being even better.

Shocker

We've already mentioned how the first Shocker wasn't much cop. And neither is the second, despite being portrayed by prestigious actor Bokeem Woodbine.

Woodbine's Shocker is certainly more dangerous - coming close to killing Peter Parker. But he's defeated by Ned, who isn't exactly the most-formidable of fighters. If you're to be a good villain you can't really be stopped by a teenager - especially one without any special powers.

Green Goblin (Amazing Spider-Man 2)

Dane DeHaan as The Green Goblin in The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Fans had high hopes when they found out that Dane Dehann would be playing Harry Osborn, and therefore the Green Goblin in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. And, as Harry, he was definitely an interesting character.

But his Goblin appearance was questionable, even if rather fascinating. He gets some credit for killing off Gwen Stacy but, by and large, he was a mild threat - instead relying more on Electro to do his dirty work for him. And speaking of Electro...

Electro

The best villains are the ones with deep, complex backstories. Where they have a reason to do what they do.

Yet although Max Dillon was bullied, it doesn't mean it warrants him trying to kill everybody and make them live in darkness as Electro. Given the huge power he had at his disposal, he should have succeeded in wiping out Spider-Man. But, by spending too much time trying to mock his opponent, he fell on his own sword.

Venom

When fans saw the trailer for Spider-Man 3, many were excited. We were finally about to see Venom, arguably the most popular of all villains that the web-slinger has ever gone up against.

But Venom fell flat, with Sony forcing Sam Raimi to include him in his blockbuster - despite the director originally intending to have just two villains in the forms of Sandman and the New Goblin. Topher Grace's Eddie Brock was nothing short of irritating and Venom itself was poor use of CGI and an example of a rushed character. His appearance in the movie ultimately saw the blockbuster fail to meet the same lofty heights as before.

Sandman

We're getting to more solid villains now and Sandman, who also appeared in Spider-Man 3, makes the list.

The raw emotion in the character is evident throughout Thomas Hayden Church's appearance but the bad guy ended up having a sidelined role due to Sony's decision to include Venom. Plus the decision to make him Uncle Ben's killer out of the blue was...odd, to say the least.

New Goblin

We've already covered two of the villains from Spider-Man 3. But Harry Osborn was an upgrade on both of them and his chemistry with Peter Parker in that movie was one of it's redeeming features.

That was mainly due to the hard work that Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 had put in, with the two previous outings helping to build a connection between both Peter and Harry. This made their fights with each other that bit more enthralling - and their team-up at the end that bit more exhilarating. He's definitely deserving of such a high spot on this list.

Mysterio

Another thing a good bad guy needs is charisma. And Mysterio, played by the brilliant Jake Gyllenhaal, had then in abundance.

He's ultra-cool, using hologram technology in order to convince everybody that he's a hero saving the world from a huge threat. But the truth is that HE is the threat. He seems to have the upper hand on Spider-Man throughout the course of Spider-Man: Far From Home, making him one of the deadliest foes on this list. Fortunately, Peter Parker is able to reign supreme.

Doctor Octopus

Spider-Man 2 Doc Oc

Spider-man 2 is still regarded as one of the best superhero movies ever created despite releasing in 2004, long before the days of the MCU. And that is mainly because of Doctor Octopus.

He's somebody the audience is able to sympathize with. He's ambitious and in love but all of that comes crashing down, which leads him to become Doc Ock and resorting to crime in order to show he's still got what it takes to thrive in society. He's also the only villain on this list to show any remorse, killing himself in order to save New York City from a horrible fate.

Green Goblin

Willem Dafoe Green Goblin

Spider-Man was the first-ever movie starring the web-slinger. Therefore, it's only right that Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin sits top of the podium.

Has there been a finer casting choice than Dafoe as Norman Osborn in superhero movie history? Maybe not. He's wicket to the very core, taking great pleasure in inflicting pain and suffering on others. Even when he appears to show remorse it's just a trick - one Spidey thankfully doesn't fall for. Death isn't the end of his character either, with Norman convincing son Harry to follow in his same goblin footsteps.
