Insomniac Games has finally added Tobey Maguire’s costume – aka the "Raimi suit" – to the list of unlockable costumes in Marvel's Spider-Man. The blockbusting PS4 game has already been out for months, yet it still remains in the public consciousness. Thanks to each installment of its DLC trilogy – collectively known as Spider-Man: The City that Never Sleeps – gamers have had even more Spider-Man content to savor, with fresh missions to undertake and new villains to be battled.

But Spider-Man enthusiasts have also loved swinging around New York City in different suits, drawn from his extensive history in pop culture. Despite the fact that the game has nearly 30 different Spidey costumes for players to chose from, each new DLC has added more to its collection of skins, which now ranges from Spider-Man Noir to his barely-dressed Spider-Undies iteration. And now, the costume worn by Tobey Maguire will be part of this selection.

In a tweet from Insomniac Games’ official Twitter account, the developer announced that the Raimi suit was now available for gamers to appreciate as a treat for the holidays. The message was accompanied by a still of the costume in action, and the note that it was free for players that had already purchased Marvel’s Spider-Man. The tweet itself can be seen below.

This move will surely please Spider-Man fans, particularly those that are filled with nostalgia for Sam Raimi’s original movie trilogy. Indeed, as the first (and longest serving) big-screen Spider-Man, many moviegoers and gamers remain firmly attached to Tobey Maguire’s iteration, which the game frequently references. This fondness extends to Maguire's iconic costume, which – aside from his symbiote suit – remained consistent throughout the trilogy. However the Raimi suit has been a contentious topic for some time online. Until now, many players have aggressively criticized the developer and felt entitled to the skin, especially since other movie costumes – such as the Homecoming and Into the Spider-Verse suits – are part of the game’s sizable roster of outfits. Thankfully, this announcement will resolve another long-running dispute over Marvel’s Spider-Man.

Indeed, this is not the only controversy to hit the superhero video game; Insomniac faced a similar bout of vitriol in the #puddlegate scandal. Fans believed that Spider-Man’s visuals had been downgraded when they noticed that the size and position of two puddles had been altered in a newly released look at game play. Several of the developers later unveiled a patch that trolled their critics with cartoonish puddle stickers. The company was also forced to remove a wedding proposal Easter egg from the game, after the details of that dubious situation came to light.

It is unclear whether Activision always intended to incorporate the Raimi suit into Marvel’s Spider-Man at this time, or if they have bowed to public pressure. Nevertheless, gamers are now able to enjoy seeing it in action, alongside the Cyborg Spider-Man suit and the Aaron Aikman armor suit, which are part of the Silver Lining DLC available from December 21. Plus, when that all-but confirmed sequel finally lands, fans of Marvel’s Spider-Man are sure to enjoy a whole host of new outfits – which will likely include Miles Morales’ costume alongside many other firm favorites.
