Although Sony's upcoming Spider-Man game is very much a Peter Parker adventure, developers at Insomniac Games are doubling down on the possibility of playing as Miles Morales.

Featuring a who's who of Spider-Man favorites, the likes of Norman Osborn, Shocker, Kingpin, and Aunt May are all confirmed to appear. However, away from swinging across the New York skyline, fans get a bonus treat to play as Mary Jane Watson. MJ is teased as having an investigative journalist role in the sandbox game, but is she going to be the only playable character apart from Mr. Parker?

For months now, fans have known that Miles Morales will have a part to play in the sprawling superhero game, however, Insomniac isn't willing to confirm what that role will be just yet. When a supposed Reddit link outlined several of the game's details (as well as Morales being playable as a Spider-Man superfan), the official Insomniac Games account was quick to shut down the rumors:

Is this a sleight of hand or is it the real deal? While Insomniac highlighted the Reddit post's inaccuracy, it didn't take the step of officially confirming Morales is not a playable character. Given Morales' fan-favorite status in the comics, animated shows, and confirmation of his existence in the MCU, it would be foolish not to cash in on his marketability. Not that anyone is bored of Peter Parker, but it would make sense to branch the already expansive game out into the life of Miles Morales.

It is all hearsay at the moment, but some interesting comments from Insomniac's Bryan Intihar in an issue of GamesTM confirmed that Miles would be a major part of the campaign:

"Just like MJ can provide a different perspective on the world, I thought Miles and his relationship to Peter bring something different. I’m pretty excited about him and where we take him. It’s going to be something. It’s going to surprise people.”

Focusing on the "different perspective" idea, it certainly implies that Morales will be just as playable as MJ is. Developers have already said that Mary Jane will surprise players, so Morales is expected to do the same.

Ultimately, the idea of having Morales in the game without at least a playable DLC is highly unlikely. Looking over at Rocksteady's Arkham games, fans were able to suit up as the likes of Nightwing and Catwoman when the main story was completed. However, if the leaks are to be believed, Morales could be playable throughout Spider-Man. It is a game of wait and see, but with E3 just around the corner, prepare for some major Spider-Man news ahead of the game's September release.
