Xbox One owners hoping to play Insomniac's Spider-Man should prepare for disappointment; the PS4-exclusive is never making the console jump. The game, which was recently received a release date, has been one of the most anticipated titles coming to PlayStation 4. Spider-Man made its debut at E3 2016. Since that point, it's been a long history of reveals and teases from studio Insomniac.
Insomniac hit it big by producing the Ratchet and Clank series for PlayStation. However, they've since gone multiplatform. They're responsible for Xbox One launch title Sunset Overdrive, which is still considered one of the best exclusives on the platform. This, along with the fact that some PlayStation 4 exclusives have been released on other consoles recently (like Crash Bandicoot: The N. Sane Trilogy) made it seem like Spider-Man might go mutliplatform. However, Peter Parker's PlayStation outing will never make it to Xbox One.
The sad news comes directly from Insomniac Games' Twitter account. When asked by a fan when the game will come to Xbox One, Insomniac replied, quite bluntly, "Never."

It's a harsh but understandable reality. The Spider-Man license is a big one for PlayStation. On the big screen, PlayStation's parent company Sony is sharing the character's cinematic appearances with Marvel and Disney because they own Spidey's film rights, but the gaming rights of the character actually belong to Marvel Games, a division of Marvel Entertainment.
Thankfully, the hopes for a Marvel game on Xbox aren't completely dashed. Insomniac's Spider-Man might be the biggest superhero game on the horizon, but it's not the only one. Square Enix has two mysterious Marvel projects in development. Both games will, presumably, be multiplatform when they eventually release.
The first and biggest upcoming Square Enix game is a third-person Avengers title. There's very little known about the game. It has been promised to tell an original story with The Avengers team and will be apart of a "multi-year, multi-game" process. These are the only confirmed details. The yet untitled game has the makings of a very ambitious project. This is probably why Square Enix recently expanded the development team. Yet the chances of this game materializing soon are rather slim. The release date will be, at the earliest, probably sometime in 2019.
Even further in the future is Square Enix's second Marvel game. Reports have been circling that the studio is working on a project based on Guardians of the Galaxy. The details for this game are even fewer than those of The Avengers project. However, it's not expected that this game will directly connect to the MCU or Telltale's Guardians of the Galaxy series. It'll be its own separate project. Although it will undoubtedly take cues from things that fans love so much about the current Guardians.
Xbox One owners losing out on Spider-Man, unless they buy a PlayStation 4, is a big blow. Insomniac's attempt to adapt the famous wall-crawler does appear like it could be the best Spider-Man game in a very long time, if ever. Yet there's still hope to play as some Marvel heroes down the line on Xbox. It's just going to take a lot of patience and hope. Maybe Square Enix's Marvel games won't be as good as Insomniac's Spider-Man. There's a chance though that they could be even better.
Insomniac's Spider-Man releases on Tuesday, September 7 on PlayStation 4.
