With little more than a month until the release, Insomniac’s Spider-Man PS4 has wrapped up working on the development of the game. Spider-Man appears to be Marvel Entertainment’s attempt at reestablishing a successful video game universe. After a successful demo at E3, Sony looks prepared to deliver one of the best games of 2018.
Since Spider-Man was announced back in 2016, Sony has been careful to keep much of the plot under wraps. The open-world action-adventure game will be forgoing the overly familiar origin story. Gamers will instead play as an older Peter Parker/Spider-Man confident in his superhero role. The list of baddies for Spidey to contend with continues to grow, including familiar names like Kingpin, Vulture, and Norman Osborne. It has yet to be confirmed but Insomniac’s choice in villains could be indicating the appearance of the Sinister Six. Along with Spider-Man himself, players will get the chance to be Mary Jane as well. Miles Morales will be making an appearance, much to fans’ pleasure, but what his role is and if he’ll be a playable character remains a mystery.
Insomniac announced on Twitter that Spider-Man PS4 has gone gold, meaning that the core experience has been completed and can be sent off to manufacturing. The developer thanked Sony and Marvel for their support.
While there is currently no word for any planned sequels, Insomniac already appears to be preparing for the possibility. Fans saw numerous Easter eggs during E3, including ones of the Avengers mansion and Daredevil. Add in the lack of fan-favorite Venom and it looks like the developer is setting up for more Spidey in the future as well as a shared universe should Spider-Man prove to be a success. Considering the current popularity of the superhero genre, now is the time for Marvel to cash in on the trend.
There is a lot riding on the PlayStation exclusive. Along with being the beginning or a swift end to a possible Marvel Gaming Universe, Spider-Man PS4 will have to compete with the nostalgia players have for some of the successful Spider-Man games of the early 2000s. Considering all the hype surrounding this game, anything short of amazing would count against it. But fans should be confident with Insomniac at the helm. The developer has created many loved games, including Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and Sunset Overdrive. Spider-Man looks like it's headed to become a winner for the developer, but only time will tell if this will be a hit or a miss.
