No Way Home Created A Spider-Man Plot Hole (& The MCU Needs To Fix It)

Spider-Man: No Way Home drastically changed Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) life, but amidst the multiversal chaos and heartbreaking moments, it created a big plot hole that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has to fix soon. The MCU is preparing for its upcoming crossover events in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, and it has already seen a couple of multiversal conflicts, most notably the one in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Peter and Doctor Strange’s botched spell made way for the appearance of villains from past Spider-Man movies and variants of the web-slinger as well, but it also left Peter all alone at the end.

The only solution Spider-Man could find to stop a massive multiversal conflict was having Doctor Strange cast a spell that would make the world forget Peter Parker, leaving him completely alone and starting all over again from scratch without his friends and colleagues. This second spell solved the problem of more Spider-Man villains crossing over into the MCU, but it created a major plot hole as it didn’t solve the problem that made way for the whole No Way Home conflict.

The World Forgot Peter Parker After No Way Home… But Not Spider-Man

The whole conflict in Spider-Man: No Way Home started because Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) exposed Spider-Man’s identity and framed the young hero for his death at the end of Far From Home. Peter asked Strange to cast a spell that would make everyone forget he’s Spider-Man, but he tried to change the spell so many times that it ended up opening the gates of the multiverse. The final spell successfully made the world forget Peter Parker, and as shown in the final post-credits scene of No Way Home, the spell altered all evidence of Peter’s existence, although in weird ways in some cases, such as obscuring his face in videos and photos. Following this logic, Mysterio’s video should have been altered too, erasing the part where he revealed Spider-Man’s identity, but not the rest.

This means that, even though the world has no idea who Peter Parker is, they still remember Spider-Man (as confirmed by Doctor Strange talking about him in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), and because Peter and Strange did nothing to clear his name, the world still believes Spider-Man is a murderer. In an effort to solve part of the mess that Mysterio provoked, Peter created even more chaos and, in the end, wasn’t able to fix the biggest problem he was facing at the beginning of No Way Home.

Spider-Man 4 Will Have To Deal With His Bad Public Image

At the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter was seen moving to a small apartment, making a new Spider-Man suit, and listening to the police’s radio so he knows where to go to fight crime. However, and as mentioned above, Spider-Man is still a murderer to the public eye, so it’s hard to believe that he simply went back to fighting crime in the streets. Spider-Man 4 will have to address this and see the web-slinger dealing with his bad public image, which will be even more difficult with J. Jonah Jameson and The Daily Bugle. There’s a lot that Spider-Man 4 has to cover after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, but it can’t forget about Mysterio’s video reveal and how this affected Spider-Man’s public image.
