A recently posted Spider-Man: Miles Morales clip has Miles give a strangely enthusiastic reaction to an ongoing crime. The 2020 follow-up to Marvel’s Spider-Man saw Miles Morales step into the spotlight as a fledgling superhero after gaining spider-based powers of his own at the conclusion of the main game, allowing players to utilize the young Spider-Man’s unique Venom abilities on top of the polished gameplay that made Insomniac’s 2018 superhero sandbox title a breakout success on the PlayStation 4.

Just like with Marvel’s Spider-Man, players found plenty of interesting details and Easter Eggs within Spider-Man: Miles Morales, from hidden references to other Marvel heroes like the X-Men to a wide variety of unlockable alternate costumes to ensure that Miles looks his best while ridding the open-world city of New York from criminals and supervillains alike. While exploring Spider-Man: Miles Morales’ sandbox setting, Miles can interact with NPCs passing him by, collect various mementos that he’s scattered across the city, and receive messages from his good friend Ganke Lee alerting him to random street crimes that civilians can report from an app that the tech-savvy teen has created to assist his web-swinging buddy.

It’s here that Reddit user Mariosonicpac noticed a quite unorthodox reaction from Miles during a round of Spider-Man: Miles Morales, one that they documented in a video post on r/SpidermanPS4 (via Game Rant). Miles is busy performing some impressive midair tricks using Spider-Man: Miles Morales’s aerial stunt system when he gets a call from Ganke alerting him to a hostage crisis taking place near his current location. Instead of the usual expression of concern or heroic determination, Miles replies with an enthusiastic “cool” - which isn’t exactly the type of reaction one usually finds appropriate when it comes to people being held at gunpoint. This odd response has naturally led many players in the comment section to repeat J Jonah Jameson’s assertions that Spider-Man is a menace to society, given that he appears to be relishing the idea of innocent lives being in mortal danger.

Miles might not be so cheery in his next adventure, as insiders have claimed that the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will have a much darker plot than either of its two predecessors. Details about this new installment of Insomniac’s critically acclaimed superhero series are still unfolding, with some fans pointing to Spider-Man: Miles Morales for signs that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will feature a larger game world as well. However, while Miles will be present and accounted for to help Peter Parker stop classic villains like Venom and Kraven The Hunter in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, he might have to wait a while longer for his next solo outing given Insomniac’s commitment to both Spider-Man 2 and the connected Marvel’s Wolverine.

Miles' odd exclamation of "cool" was likely in response to the stunning mid-air trick he had just finished performing rather than Ganke's bad news, but it is certainly strange to see the normally compassionate hero of Spider-Man: Miles Morales act so cavalier about innocent people being put in harm’s way. Thankfully, the person trapped in the hostage situation will likely be saved by the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man - even if he isn’t taking this troubling ordeal as seriously as he should be.
