Disney's purchase of 20th Century Fox seems to partly be the reason why Spider-Man left the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans were devastated a few weeks ago when it was announced that Disney and Sony had failed to strike a deal to keep Spider-Man in the MCU. Early on it was thought that Disney and Sony could still renegotiate a deal, but it was confirmed yesterday that Spidey is officially out of the MCU.

Reports initially claimed that Disney wanted a 50/50 split of the profits for future Spider-Man movies, but it was later revealed that Disney had only asked for 25%. Both Sony and Disney have maintained a level of professionalism about the situation, but fans were quick to blame Sony for the character leaving the MCU, while others accused Disney of just being greedy. Money seemed to be one of the main reasons why Disney and Sony's deal fell through, but Disney's purchase of 20th Century Fox might be partly to blame as well.

A new report from Indiewire claims that Disney's purchase of Fox influenced the decision to have Spider-Man leave the MCU. When Sony Pictures chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra talked about the split with Marvel, he mentioned that Kevin Feige has been “stretched incredibly thin” because of the characters they acquired from buying 20th Century Fox. This comment echos a previous statement from Sony when they said, "the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him [Feige] – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own." Vinciquerra went on to show his respect for Marvel, while also commenting that they are capable of handling Spider-Man movies on their own.

While Spider-Man will no longer be part of the MCU, Sony has big plans for the famous web-slinger. Not only are they still developing solo Spider-Man films starring Holland, but they are also planning to include Spider-Man in their villain universe. It was also recently announced that Sony has 5-6 Spider-Man TV shows planned, but it's unknown how these shows will connect to the movies or what characters they might focus on.

Even if Disney focusing on the IP they acquired from the Fox deal isn't the main reason why they lost Spider-Man, it's completely possible it influenced the outcome. Marvel announced at SDCC that the X-Men were joining the MCU at some point and that a new Fantastic Four movie set in the MCU was also happening. With the poor reception the latest installments of both franchises got, it makes sense why Feige and Marvel would be putting all of their focus on the X-Men and the Fantastic Four as they will likely be a big part of Phase 5 and beyond. That being said, most fans would love to have Spider-Man, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four all part of the MCU, but that seems like wishful thinking at this point.
