The co-directors of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse have provided further insight as to how Spider-Gwen factors into the film. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is an upcoming animated feature that’s based on the Marvel comic book character Miles Morales, who is also known to be one of the many Spider-Men in the Spider-Verse.

The movie is set to focus on Morales' struggle in juggling his high school life with coming to terms with his newfound superhero abilities and reputation. The film, which has been co-written by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, will not only feature the debut of Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, but it’ll also introduce Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy and Jake Johnson as Peter Parker. Fans are eager to see Morales and Stacy introduced into the multi-verse, but many still have questions as to just how much of a role Gwen is going to have in the film.

Seeking answers, Screen Rant posed these questions to the co-directors of the film during an exclusive media room interview at San Diego Comic-Con. After the directors were asked just how the character figures into the story, Rodney Rothman gave director Bob Persichetti the floor to provide an explanation. While keeping many of the details of the plot under wraps, Persichetti went onto state that Gwen Stacy comes into Morales’ life at a time where he could use quite a bit of help, and, in turn, she becomes a peer and a friend to him. Persichetti noted that, while Peter Parker is an older character that acts as a mentor, Gwen Stacy is a character that Miles can relate to on a more personal level.

"Well without any kind of spoilers. I would say that she's an incredibly capable Spider-Person, who Miles meets in a moment when he could use [help]... and she's also almost a peer of Miles. They're both teenagers in our movie. So, she becomes someone that she can relate to on that level. Where our version of Peter Parker is a little older and feels like an older mentor and she's someone who's a peer."

In Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Gwen Stacy is set to make her official debut as Spider-Gwen – who’s also known as a superhero who goes by the name of Spider-Woman. Despite being from an alternate reality where she is the one bitten by the radioactive spider, Gwen also falls within the group of Spider-People throughout the Spider-Verse. Over the years, Stacy has gained an increasing amount of audience attention and fan love due to the continuous portrayal of her strong character. In June 2017, it was confirmed by Sony that Steinfeld would be voicing Spider-Gwen, who will also appear as a teenager, while Peter will appear as an adult.

While further plot details haven’t been released as to how big of a role Stacy plays in the upcoming film, fans can expect her iconic debut to be fairly impressive. From the comments released by Persichetti, it sounds as if Spider-Gwen is indeed going to have quite the significant role in the story as Miles Morales works to come to terms with his new reality. Even if the film isn’t inherently focused on Stacy, fans are eager to see the part she plays in the latest cinematic addition to the Spider-Verse.
