A leaked audition tape has added fuel to the rumors that Marvel is looking to cast Gwen Stacy for the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel.

Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1965, Gwen Stacy is often considered Spider-Man's one true love. The character is also in vogue among Spider-Man fans right now. She was popularized by Emma Stone in Sony's Amazing Spider-Man films. The popularity boost led Marvel to revisit Gwen Stacy in 2014's "Spider-Verse" event that saw Jason Latour and Robbi Rodriguez create an alternate universe where Gwen was the one bitten by a radioactive spider.

Gwen has everything Marvel could possibly want from a character. On one hand, she has a rich history and a deep fan-base. Meanwhile, Stone's performance in the role and the success of Spider-Gwen have given her a contemporary edge. It's no surprise that audition tapes for Gwen Stacy in the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel are beginning to leak, suggesting that Marvel is looking to cast her. The latest, shared by Omega Underground, features European actress Iris Haller.

This is the second Gwen Stacy audition to leak in recent days, and it's somewhat unusual for Marvel. The House of Ideas is usually known for its secrecy. Even actors auditioning for minor roles are typically required to sign strict Non-Disclosure Agreements. Both actresses involved have been new to their acting career, suggesting Marvel may have actually issued an open casting-call.

If that is the case, we're beginning to get a sense of how Marvel could have reinvented Gwen Stacy for the MCU. The previous actress, Louna, was French; Iris Haller is from Luxembourg, and French is a common language spoken in that country. Crucially, in the comics Gwen's mother is French. It may be that, in the MCU, Gwen's parents have divorced. She's spent much of her life living in Europe, but has now moved to the U.S. to live with her father.

It's worth stressing that the dialogue in the audition is unlikely to be lifted from the film. It would be odd for Gwen to discuss the death of Uncle Ben, for example. Although the MCU timeline is rather confused after Spider-Man: Homecoming, by the time of the sequel, Ben would have been dead for some time. What the dialogue does likely hint at, though, are the key relationships Marvel is looking for. They want an actress who can play alongside Tom Holland's Peter Parker, but also one who can interact with Gwen's father, a police officer.

If two audition tapes have leaked, it's likely more will follow. Only time will tell whether or not Gwen Stacy will appear in the Homecoming sequel, but the evidence certainly seems to be building.
