When Spider-Man: Homecoming takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline has officially been confirmed by Disney. Although the first Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland was released in July 2017, the film has not been part of Disney+'s collection of MCU content during the last few years. This is because Spider-Man: Homecoming was made by Sony with Marvel Studios' help and the film's streaming rights landed elsewhere. The film's long-awaited arrival on Disney's streaming service not only means there is a great opportunity for audiences to watch it, but it also means Spider-Man: Homecoming getting an official placement on the MCU timeline.Disney+ offers subscribers various ways to look at the MCU movies and shows available to stream, including an MCU timeline viewing order. Spider-Man: Homecoming's MCU timeline placement has now been officially confirmed to take place between Black Panther and Doctor Strange based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Timeline Order menu.

While Spider-Man: Homecoming was released before Black Panther but after Doctor Strange, its MCU timeline placement is correct by all accounts. The solo movie takes place two months after Captain America: Civil War, placing the events in 2016. Black Panther takes place shortly after T'Chaka's death in Civil War, while Doctor Strange's events span into 2017. This means Spider-Man: Homecoming's MCU timeline spot is correct.

Spider-Man: Homecoming's MCU Timeline Placement Ignores Its Biggest Mistake

The ironic part of Disney correctly confirming when Spider-Man: Homecoming takes place in the MCU timeline is that it has to ignore the movie's biggest mistake. The film famously opens with a flashback sequence to the aftermath of the Battle of New York where Adrian Toomes is cleaning up the mess before Damage Control shuts him down. The sequence takes place in 2012, which is why many were so surprised to see Spider-Man: Homecoming's 8 Years Later title card appear to transition viewers from this scene to Peter Parker's current life in the MCU.

Much has been made about the timeline mistake Spider-Man: Homecoming includes, with a lot of the blame falling on Sony. However, the movie was still worked on in collaboration with Marvel Studios, meaning Kevin Feige and the rest of the MCU team also overlooked the detail. Having Spider-Man: Homecoming take place 8 years after The Avengers breaks the MCU timeline. It would either mean the solo film takes place in 2020 (four years later than it does) or that The Avengers took place two years earlier than expected in 2010.

Even though MCU directors Anthony and Joe Russo have acknowledged the mistake, neither Sony nor Marvel Studios have made an attempt to fix it. Unlike many other MCU timeline mistakes, Spider-Man: Homecoming could have been updated at any time to correctly state "4 Years Later." Instead, the studios have elected to continue ignoring the error, which Spider-Man: Homecoming's MCU timeline placement does once again.
