Marvel Studios keeps expanding its Cinematic Universe by introducing new heroes, such as Doctor Strange and Black Panther, and bringing other heroes back for new adventures, like the Guardians of the Galaxy. But the MCU is not limiting itself, and after reaching a deal with Sony, it’s now adding Spider-Man to the mix.
The addition of Spider-Man to the MCU was one of the biggest surprises the studio had up its sleeve last year, and fans got a small taste of what the new Peter Parker (played by Tom Holland) will be like in Captain America: Civil War, where he had the chance to fight next to War Machine and Iron Man – after all, it was Tony Stark himself who flew to Queens to recruit young Spider-Man. Introducing this new and improved Peter in the third Captain America movie was a smooth move, but a connection to the rest of the MCU was necessary for his solo-movie – that’s what Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau, who also directed the first two Iron Man films) are for.
Tony Stark, the man who kickstarted the MCU as we know it, and his bodyguard and friend Happy Hogan will appear in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Tony’s inclusion comes, in part, as a result of the relationship between him and Peter that was established in Civil War and will be further explored in Homecoming, but how exactly does Happy Hogan come into the mix?
In an interview with CinemaBlend, Favreu was asked about how big of a role he has in Spider-Man’s new solo movie, as it has been rumoured to be more than just a cameo, to which he replied: “I’m like… I’m looking after him. He needs someone to help him out.”
Just as he has done with Tony for years, Hogan will keep an eye on Tony’s new recruit – and it wouldn’t feel right to have Happy Hogan without Tony Stark popping up at some point. The last time we saw Hogan he was recovering from a near-deadly terrorist attack but he is ready to jump back into action. Favreau added that he “had a lot of fun on that movie [Spider-Man: Homecoming], working with Robert [Downey Jr] and everything. It was a good time, and I liked the whole gang. It was really terrific.”
Happy Hogan has not only been Tony’s bodyguard but also his friend and right hand in times of need – and let us not forget he teamed up with Black Widow in Iron Man 2 to take out the security personnel at Hammer’s factory in order to catch Ivan Vanko. So now that we know Hogan will look after Peter as he does with Tony, let’s hope he will have some action scenes as well, especially after spending the entirety of Iron Man 3 on a hospital bed.
