Spider-Man was finally brought into the MCU in Spider-Man: Homecoming which included Tom Holland's acclaimed performance as the wall-crawling hero. The movie also included some returning MCU characters as well as a few memorable new characters brought into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

With these fun characters in a movie that mixed the fun superhero adventure with a high school comedy, there were plenty of great lines. When looking at the first and last lines of the main characters, it can say a lot about their development over the course of the movie and even tease some aspects of the future movies.

Tony Stark

Tony yelling at Peter in Spider-Man Homecoming

"What are you doing, a little video diary?" – "Want me to get the door for you, hon?"

After recruiting Spider-Man to help fight Captain America, Tony remarks on Peter making a video diary of his adventures. At the end of the movie, Tony grabs the door for Pepper as he plans to propose to her during a press conference.

Tony approving of Peter's video diary shows how they share the same excitement of being a superhero. His last line is a nice reminder, that Pepper is probably the only one who can keep Tony in line.

Happy

Favreau as Happy Hogan, talking on phone in elevator, in Spider-Man: Homecoming

"Who are you talking to?" - "Are you kidding? I’ve been carrying this since 2008."

As Happy Hogan taking Peter to meet up with Tony in Germany, he is less enthusiastic about Peter narrating his video diary. When Tony asks Happy if he still has "that ring" Happy confirms he's been carrying it since 2008.

With the first line, the somewhat tense relationship between Happy and Peter is submitted. The final line is a funny in-joke about how Happy has been rooting for Tony and Pepper since the first Iron Man movie in 2008.

Karen

Peter using the AI Karen in Spider-Man: Homecoming

"Good evening, Peter." - "Great job, Peter. You are 98 percent successful."

When Peter accesses the full capabilities of his suit, he is greeted by the suit's A.I. system who he calls Karen. After trying to save the ferry from disaster, Karen congratulates Peter on the effort but lets him know he wasn't completely successful.

When Karen introduces herself, it is like Peter is one step close to becoming Tony Stark, even getting an A.I. similar to J.A.R.V.I.S. Peter's relationship with Karen is also really funny as she is very encouraging of the young hero, even putting a positive spin on his failure to save the day.

Flash

Flash Thompson reacts to Spider-Man taking his car in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

"What's up, Penis Parker?" - "Uh, sir, technically, this is my dad's car, sir. So I can’t..."

Flash Thompson is Peter Parker's high school bully who greets him with a mean yet unimaginative nickname. As Flash arrives at the homecoming dance, he nervously lets Spider-Man take his dad’s car to go save the day.

The first line is a reminder that, despite being a superhero, Peter still has to deal with fellow teens like Flash being cruel to him. However, his last line shows that Flash is not as tough and cool as he acts, and also ironically has a lot of respect for Spider-Man.

Liz

Liz smiles at Peter at school in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

"Let’s move to the next question." - "Whatever’s going on with you, I hope you figure it out."

Before his romance with MJ, Peter had a crush on Liz Allen who oversaw the school quiz team as its captain. After her dad is arrested and Peter ditches her at the dance, she says goodbye to Peter before leaving school.

Her first line shows Liz to be a dedicated leader of the team which seems to be something Peter really admires about her. Her farewell line speaks to Peter’s constant struggle with being a superhero and living a normal teen life.

Ned

Ned wearing a Spider-Man mask in Spider-Man Homecoming

"Join me, and together... we'll build my new Lego Death Star." - "I thought you didn't have any friends."

Ned introduces himself as Peter’s best friend when showing off his new Star Wars LEGO toys. At the end of the movie, Ned questions Michelle when she says her friends call her MJ.

Immediately, Ned shows that he is unafraid to embrace his nerdy side which shows why he is one of the few people Peter can be himself around. His final line seems to be a hint at welcoming MJ into their group of friends as she is a fellow outsider.

Aunt May

Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, opening door in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

"What was that?" - "What the f-?"

When Peter sneaks back into his apartment in his Spider-Man costume, he fails to notice Ned on his bed which causes a commotion Aunt May notices. At the end of the movie, Peter once again returns home and puts on his costume, not realizing May is standing behind him and is understandably shocked.

The first line sets up the second line in a pretty funny way. After getting caught by Ned, Peter is almost discovered by May, as well. Then, at the end of the movie, he makes the same mistake.

Adrian Toomes / The Vulture

Adrian Toomes in Spider-Man: Homecoming; his head turned to the face backseat of his car

"Things are never gonna be the same now." - "If I knew who he was, he'd already be dead."

The movie opens with Adrian Toomes and his crew cleaning up in the aftermath of the Battle in New York from The Avengers and Toomes remarks the world has changed forever. After being arrested, Toomes is in prison and lies to criminal Mac Gargan about knowing Spider-Man’s identity.

Opening the movie with a callback to The Avengers seems to be the movie clearly establishing this Spider-Man in the MCU. Toomes’ line also hints at his ideology of having to change with the times. His final line could simply be a way of addressing the lingering question of Toomes knowing about Peter or it could set up something like the Sinister Six for the future.

MJ

Zendaya as MJ in Spider-Man: Homecoming, sitting at a school desk, writing in notebook with a pencil

"Too late." - "All right, so we should run some drills."

When Peter and Ned watch Liz from across the cafeteria, they mention that they should stop staring before they start to look creepy but MJ, or Michelle, already has them caught. Following Liz’s departure, Michelle is made captain of the decathlon team and gets right into the role.

The first line does a nice job of introducing a very new version of MJ. Instead of the usual popular girl, she is an acerbic and nonconformist teen, played wonderfully by Zendaya. The final line shows MJ coming out of her shell a bit. Also, her replacing Liz as captain of the team sets her up to be Peter's next romantic interest.

Peter Parker / Spider-Man

An unmasked and sweaty Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland, in Homecoming

"New York. Queens. It’s a rough borough, but hey, it’s home." - "May?"

Peter reintroduces himself in this movie with him narrating his video diary, complete with his attempt at a gravelly, tough-guy voice. When he arrives home at the end of the movie, he calls out for May before trying on his new suit.

Peter’s opening narration is funny for a few reasons. It plays on how Peter would narrate within the comics, it shows that he is far from a gritty superhero, and it shows the kind of fun a young superhero would have. His last line sets up May discovering his identity as well as plant the seeds for the truth really getting out in Spider-Man: Far From Home.
