New details regarding the mysterious "femme fatale" rumored to appear in Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 offer a better idea of which Marvel character will be joining the MCU in next year's film. With the major changes coming in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4, Marvel has been tight-lipped about Phase 4 of the MCU. But thanks to the Sony deal that allows Spider-Man to appear in Marvel Studios' movies, the character's own trilogy is moving along even as the future of the other Avengers remains up in the air.

We don't know anything concrete about the unnamed sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, but it will be arriving next July after the Phase 3 ending that is Avengers 4. Because of that, promotion for the film is sure to begin before we know the fate of Peter's teammates, and already the rumors are flowing. In January, we learned that the Spider-Man sequel was seeking a femme fatale character of European descent. And while there were a number of candidates that seemed likely to fill the role—from Black Cat to Silver Sable—the latest news on the mysterious character may hone in on who she is.

That Hashtag Show, who revealed the original report of the femme fatale, are back with a little more info on the character. According to their source, the 20-something actor being sought will fill a "Bond-girl type international agent" role in the movie. Given that, THS feels fairly certain that the character will be Jessica Drew—better known as Spider-Woman.

As superheroes grew more popular in the '60s and '70s, Marvel and DC both began creating female versions of their popular male characters to avoid the competition using the name first. Stan Lee thus created Spider-Woman for 1977's Marvel Spotlight #32 and the character has been a part of the Marvel Universe ever since. Unlike Peter Parker, she didn't gain powers from a radioactive spider bite but instead was injected with irradiated spider's blood to save her life after she suffers uranium poisoning. She gained many of Spider-Man's abilities along with powerful pheromones, stinger blasts, and the ability to fly. She was also raised from a young age as a Hydra agent in Europe before joining S.H.I.E.L.D. and later becoming an Avenger.

Fans have been hoping to see Jessica Drew join the MCU for awhile, and she's certainly a major character who hasn't yet been adapted to live action. What's more, THS reports the film wants to cast "a male (40-60) and a female (40-49) in lead roles as agents," meaning a spy angle looks to be a key part of the next Spider-Man. Though it would certainly take the franchise in a new direction, the details so far do seem to hint Spider-Woman is a strong possibility for the upcoming Marvel film.

Outside of Spider-Woman, we've been hoping to see Firestar join the Spider-Man-Homecoming sequel given the mutant's own long history with web-slinger. Regardless of what happens, it seems Marvel is keen to expand Spidey's roster and likely take full advantage of having access to Sony's IPs. And with the movie bound to shoot soon, we should know more about Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 soon.
