Spider-Man: Far From Home is 2019's most hotly anticipated summer movie according to a new Fandango survey. Since returning to the Marvel fold, the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man has enjoyed a new lease on life on the big screen, as Tom Holland's iteration of Peter Parker made an instant impression in the MCU. After debuting in Captain America: Civil War, Holland has made three further appearances in the franchise, including his own solo adventure, 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming. Naturally, a follow-up was green-lit and this summer's Spider-Man: Far From Home will see Peter Parker and his classmates take a trip to Europe, meeting Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury and Jake Gyllenhaal's Mysterio along the way.

Spider-Man: Far From Home will have plenty of box office competition however, as this year's slew of summer blockbusters begins and Disney in particular are in for a lucrative few months. This year's line-up includes live-action remakes of Aladdin and The Lion King, along with the likes of Toy Story 4, Men In Black: International, Dark Phoenix and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. With such a range of films on offer this summer, from high-octane action romps to twee animated animals, there's something to suit everyone. Apart from fans of original movies.

The Fandango ticketing service recently conducted a survey of over 2000 customers regarding which movies they were most looking forward to in the summer of 2019 and Spider-Man: Far From Home came out on top. In other categories, The Lion King was voted most anticipated family film and Booksmart was the most anticipated comedy. The full overall Top 10 for Fandango's most anticipated movies reads as follows:

Taron Egerton as Elton John in Rocketman

1. Spider-Man: Far From Home

2. Rocketman

3. Godzilla: King Of The Monsters

4. Dark Phoenix

5. The Lion King

6. Toy Story 4

7. Men In Black International

8. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw

9. Aladdin

10. The Secret Life Of Pets 2

It's certainly no surprise to see Spidey sitting pretty at the top of this summer's list, especially after the gargantuan success of Avengers: Endgame and the web-slinger's key role in the battle against Thanos. The MCU is currently more popular than it's ever been and fans are eager to see what the franchise has in store now that the Infinity Stone saga has drawn to a close. Wider franchise implications aside, Spider-Man's more light-hearted tendencies are the perfect antidote to the intensity of Avengers: Endgame and there is already plenty of excitement regarding the debut of Gyllenhaal as Mysterio and the ongoing debate as to whether he's the true villain of Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Hollywood's increasing reliance on sequels and remakes in recent years has been well-documented but the issue is clearly showing no sign of going away. In Fandango's Top 10 survey, no less than nine of the entries are follow-ups or reinterpretations of previous releases, with Elton John biopic Rocketman the odd film out. Pixar has somewhat recognized this pattern and claimed that they have no sequels planned after Toy Story 4 but, for now at least, original material is very much taking a back seat in the cinematic landscape.

Furthermore, after Disney's purchase of Fox assets earlier this year, the Mouse House accounts for half of the 10 entries included in this survey, Spider-Man: Far From Home included. This perhaps highlights a concern many expressed prior to the deal's completion that if Disney were to take on Fox's properties, other studios would struggle to compete.
