Actor Tom Holland has said that Spider-Man: Far From Home will see Peter Parker joining forces with the costumed illusionist Mysterio to fight a group of Marvel Comics villains known as The Elementals. This announcement seems doubly perplexing - first because of the filmmakers being decidedly coy about Mysterio being a character in the movie and then because of the relative obscurity of The Elementals, even among comics-readers.

Little has been said about the story of Spider-Man: Far From Home beyond the fact that Peter Parker would somehow go on to survive his apparent death in Avengers: Infinity War. It is speculated, based on the title and the film's being shot in London, Prague, Liberec and Venice, that the story will center on Peter and his classmates traveling to Europe on some kind of school trip and Spider-Man having to reveal himself to deal with some international criminals. It was also known that Jake Gyllenhaal would be playing a leading role in the film. It has finally been confirmed that he is playing Quentin Beck AKA Mysterio - a special effects artist who turned his talents towards crime.

A report from Tom Holland Source on Twitter (which can be viewed below) suggests that Mysterio's role in the film might not be so cut and dry. After a screening of the first official trailer for Far From Home at ComicCon Experience 2018 in Brazil, Tom Holland dropped a major bombshell regarding the story of the movie. Rather than being adversaries throughout the picture, Spider-Man and Mysterio will apparently join forces to confront the menace posed by The Elementals.

First appearing in Supernatural Thrillers #8 in August of 1974, The Elementals were a quartet of immortal beings of unknown origin who drew upon the magical powers of the four classic elements. Their ranks included Hydron (Lord of Waters), Magnum (Master of the Earth), Hellfire (Wielder of Flame) and Zephyr (Mistress of The Winds). Originally enemies of The Living Pharaoh and N'Kantu, the Living Mummy, The Elementals would be betrayed by Zephyr and forced to flee the Earth. They would later return and fight Captain Marvel, back in the days when she still went by Ms. Marvel.

At first glance this report seems highly unlikely, particularly given Tom Holland's reputation for pranking his fans and reporters. Yet what Holland said matches statements made by Jake Gyllenhaal during ComicCon Experience 2018. Gyllenhaal described the movie's plot and his character's role in it during a video interview with Brazilian entertainment website, Omelette.

"There are these threats to the world, the Elementals, elemental creatures. And Mysterio is someone who knows about them and wants to make sure that the world is safe from them. And Nick Fury asks him to come on and help because he's the only one who really understands them. And then he teams up with friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and unfortunately has to make him become more than a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man"

Despite Gyllenhaal confirming Holland's story, it still seems unlikely that Spider-Man and Mysterio would be able to put up much of a fight against four immortal beings with truly magical powers. It seems a safer bet that The Elementals are all part of a long-con Mysterio has planned to scam SHIELD. Time will tell the truth of it, but this reveal, if true, casts a whole new light on the story of Spider-Man: Far From Home.
