Fans will be excited to hear that filming for the upcoming film Spider-Man: Far From Home is scheduled to kick off in two weeks, basing its production in London but extending to locations throughout Europe, as well as in the character’s home state of New York. Considering the locations, the title for the follow-up to Spider-Man: Homecoming, which was revealed on star Tom Holland’s Instagram account, makes sense.
The Sony-distributed Spider-Man: Homecoming hit theaters in 2017 and was the most recent cinematic reboot of the character. This newest incarnation was previously set up in Captain America: Civil War via a lengthy scene that featured Holland as Peter Parker and Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, aka. Iron Man. Various rumors and reveals have made headlines en route to Spider-Man: Far From Home’s announcement, and Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige was previously quoted on the globe-spanning aspect that will apparently factor heavily in the sequel.
In an interview with Collider during the junket for Ant-Man and the Wasp, Feige confirmed that Spider-Man: Far From Home will begin filming in two weeks time, marking an early July start date. With the new film’s title already leading to multiple meanings, Spider-Man: Far From Home forges onward, somewhat mysteriously, in the wake of the MCU-shattering events caused by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. The film is set to star returning characters from Spider-Man: Homecoming - including, reportedly, Michael Keaton reprising his role as villain The Vulture - and now the sequel’s production schedule has been confirmed.
What we know so far about Spider-Man: Far From Home, aside from the return of key characters and its international backdrop, regards some updated casting. Actor Jake Gyllenhaal had been in negotiations to play Mysterio, a classic Spider-Man villain who has yet to make a film appearance, though he’s prominently been featured in a few Spider-Man video games. Speaking of villains, a recent convention appearance quoted Holland as hopeful that the character might encounter Venom on camera. The comment arrives after months of rumors circulating that Holland will appear in Sony's upcoming Venom movie for a cameo. Recently, the film's director offered a carefully vague, non-committal response to those rumors.
While Avengers: Infinity War may have led to technical confusion for Spider-Man’s continued presence in the MCU, the scheduled release of Avengers 4 in May will undoubtedly help lay the foundation for Spider-Man: Far From Home. Beyond that, little has been revealed, though Tom Holland’s Instagram proves to be a reliable source for emergent disclosures.
