Concept artist, Jerad Marantz gives fans a look at an unused Elemental design for Spider-Man: Far From Home. The final film in Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe follows Peter Parker as he deals with the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame, in particular, the death of Tony Stark. At the beginning of the movie, Nick Fury and Maria Hill encounter the Earth Elemental along with Quentin Beck.
Beck AKA Mysterio claims to be a superhero whose home was destroyed by four Elementals; after helping Fury, Hill, and Parker defeat the Earth and Water Elementals, he warns of the Fire Elemental’s destructive prowess. Beck says that he hails from Earth-833 and followed an Elemental to Earth-616 (Peter Parker’s reality) to prevent the destruction of another Earth. Unfortunately for Peter Parker, Quentin Beck is not a navigator of the much-hyped Multiverse. Beck is a former Stark employee who, after inventing B.A.R.F, was fired for being unstable.
Beck embraces the illusionist persona of Mysterio to con the world into believing he is the next Iron Man. The Elements end up being a product of his holographic technology. Real or not, the Elementals we see in the film are visually impressive. Jerad Marantz, a concept artist who worked on Spider-Man: Far From Home, recently posted a picture of the Earth Elemental to Instagram. The design below is different than the one used in the final film.
The Elementals in Spider-Man: Far From Home are a fiction of Mysterio’s making, however, the Elementals do exist in comic book canon. Similar to Mysterio’s depiction of them in the film, the comic book Elementals are four extra-dimensional humanoids. Each one of these immortals has a mastery over the natural forces of earth (Magnum), fire (Hellfire), wind (Zephyr), and water (Hydron). The four rule an unopposed kingdom until trying to extend their rule into Egypt, ultimately being banished from the Earth. They return to Earth a millennia later, coming into conflict with Carol Danvers AKA Captain Marvel, who defeats them.
Spider-Man: Far From Home’s inclusion of the Elemental mythology makes future adaptations of the foursome unlikely. To say that Marvel Studios has an untapped well of source material to draw from would be an understatement—there’s no need to be redundant. As the MCU continues to expand with Phase Four films and upcoming shows on Disney+, the sky is the limit. Mysterio’s talk of the Elementals and a Multiverse serves as foreshadowing; projects like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Loki, and What If…? are poised to fully explore the idea of alternate realities.
