Fan favorite Marvel hero Spider-Man is about to become a dinosaur with an epic new Spider-Verse hero. Spider-Man is no stranger to having various forms in his 50 years in comics. Ever since the introduction of the Spider-Verse, there have been countless interpretations of the character that range from the bizarre to the epic. Some examples have included Spider-Man 2099, Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Gwen and even a cartoon pig named Spider-Ham. Now, some new variants of the Web-Head are about to make their debut in a new limited series that will showcase various Spider-People across the multiverse, leading up to the End of the Spider-Verse event.

Edge of Spider-Verse is an upcoming miniseries that will give fans a broader look into the multiple realities that Spider-heroes inhabit. According to Marvel in a press release, it will be a "five-issue limited series that introduces new Spider-heroes and redefines fan-favorites such as Araña, Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Gwen, and Spider-Man: India." Each issue in the series will include three different stories featuring different Spider-Heroes written by various creative teams, as well as incorporating an overarching story by Marvel alum Dan Slott. The first issue is already kicking things off strong as Marvel hints that the first story will focus on a version of Spider-Man 65 million years in the making.

As confirmed in Marvel's press release, the first issue of Edge of Spider-Verse will feature the debut of Spider-Rex, an all-new variant of the classic hero from Karla Pacheco and Pere Perez. In a stunning variant cover designed by artist Leinil Francis Yu, the new character is essentially a T-Rex with Spidey's powers. The dinosaur's eyes mirror the iconic expressive lenses that fans have come to know and love and there's even webs coming out of its tiny arms. This could hint that their web powers are similar to Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man as having organic source rather than artificial, though it is seen swinging through what appears to be the modern day, hinting it could exist in a society where advanced technology is possible. The issue will come from Slott, Pacheco, Perez, Alex Segura, Dustin Weaver, Martin Coccolo, Caio Majado, and Josemaria Casanovas.

Edge of Spider-Verse's Spider-Rex

Spider-Rex's first adventure in the Marvel universe will be helmed by the creative team behind Spider-Woman, and will likely set the dinosaur up as a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming final battle for the Spider-Verse. Given Spider-Rex's immense size, they have the potential to be a true powerhouse along with Marvel's recently introduced Spider-Hulk. Interestingly, Spider-Heroes tend to be connected to the supernatural as 'Spider Totems,' so it will be interesting to see how a genuine animal (rather than a cartoon like Spider-Ham) interacts with this concept. Peter Parker has long struggled with the man/spider dichotomy of his powers, but will Spider-Rex have the same competing impulses, or just be the ultimate predator?

Marvel promises that Dan Slott's overarching story will do more than just connect the stories of characters like Spider-Rex, but will also "lay the groundwork for the epic conclusion of the Spider-Verse later this year," so fans will want to make sure they don't miss an issue!
