Benedict Cumberbatch & Tom Holland Want A Spider-Man/Doctor Strange Team-Up

advertising

Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Holland are down for a Doctor Strange and Spider-Man team-up in Phase 4. With Avengers: Infinity War right around the corner, all corners of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are about to come together. The trailers have sold the movie on the arrival of Thanos, but also on the interactions between various MCU heroes. Whether it is Iron Man and Doctor Strange, Thor and Rocket, or Black Panther and Hulk, the multiple pairings are bound to hold a lot of fun.

One of the new relationships that will be forming is between Peter Parker and Stephen Strange, or Spider-Man and Doctor Strange if they use their fake names. They're both part of Iron Man's group and are set to be major players in the MCU moving forward. The marketing has only just teased the potential of their on-screen chemistry, and this won't be the end if the stars have any say.

Screen Rant spoke to both Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Holland as part of Avengers: Infinity War's press junket. One of the topics we discussed with them was the possibility of seeing this pairing again in future movies. As long as they survive the epic culmination of Phase 3, both of them are fully on-board and even have ideas for how it could happen.

SR: But both of you guys are New York heroes, you guys are both from New York City, right? Right around the corner from each other.

Holland: Queens versus Manhattan.

Cumberbatch: It's about building bridges rather than walls.

SR: It's true. Would you guys like to see you guys team up in future properties?

Cumberbatch: Definitely.

Holland: 100%.

Cumberbatch: And even if it is, you know, doing a coffee run for one another or just like hanging out or we'll go play ball in the park or it's doing every day, start picking up our laundry. I would really like that to be expanded to something really fantastic.

Holland: I came up with an idea the other day that will never happen. Peter Parker is at school, has a mad, mad headache, rings up someone and says “I just really need your help. It's really important.” And then a voice says “OK”, and then he goes over to your house and your dressed up as Doctor Strange and you're ready to do business. And I'm like, “I have a headache. Do you know what this is?” And I, because you're a brain surgeon so you think I need you to like save the world again, but really I just need your doctor expertise I just need you to be a doctor.

We already know that Spider-Man is going to be around for the future, and Strange is a safe bet to stick around too. If that is the case, it is very possible that we'll see a crossover once again. Since Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 is the first film after Avengers 4, Strange could help Peter adjust back to his everyday life, talking him through the fallout of his recent wild adventure. We know that Spidey's sequel will feature another MCU hero (but it isn't going to be Iron Man) too. Cumberbatch could very well have a small role in the movie, and maybe even help Peter get overseas so quickly.

Since the status of Doctor Strange 2 isn't quite clear, the best bet for these two to meet again will be in Spidey's sequel. But if it doesn't happen there, then a future Avengers movie would surely bring Spidey and Strange back together. Holland may not be a believer in his pitch, but that type of cameo would be a quick way to bring Cumberbatch on-board and keep Strange on the big screen until his sequel happens.

These two may not know each other yet, but they're about to go through some rough times together. If Thanos does wipe out some of the MCU's biggest heroes as many expect, they could be the biggest protectors of New York left (sorry Defenders). They're not even that far away from one another either. Both have quicker means of transportation thanks to their powers too, so this is a team-up that is bound to happen again. When and how remains to be seen, but with Holland and Cumberbatch interested, lets hope it's sooner rather than later.
