Tom Holland leapt into the hearts of fans as he made his debut both as the new face of Peter Parker and being the first to play the role in a Marvel feature, Captain America: Civil War. A little over a year ago now, Sony and Marvel came to an agreement that would allow each studio to use Spider-Man as they saw fit. Without conceding the character outright, the deal allows both studios to piggyback off each other's success without compromising their version of the character.
Holland is now the third version of the character to grace the big screen in 14 years, and despite this new iteration receiving high praise from Stan Lee himself, it looks like we're about to have yet another Spidey to enjoy. Before the ink has dried on the headlines announcing new cast members and the start of filming for Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming, Sony Pictures Animation has just revealed who will lead the efforts for their own Spider-Man animated feature.
From The Lego Movie, writer Phil Lord has penned the script and will executive produce with his partner, Christopher Miller. Amy Pascal and Avi Arad, who was a producer on Bryan Singer's X-Men and X2 as well as the original Sam Raimi Spider-Man films, are also producing with Craig Sost on as a co-producer. Sony has also tapped animated talent Bob Persichetti to direct. Persichetti most recently brought the children's book, The Little Prince, to life having co-written the story and screenplay. This will be his first run as a feature director.
The ramping up of Sony Pictures animated slate includes both films and TV series. In a press release, head of Sony Pictures Animation, Kristine Belson, stated:
“We are meaningfully stepping up our level of production, while creating an environment that fosters the best talent. Our goal is to enlarge our presence in the animation landscape with a uniquely diverse slate, and our strategy to get there is to let artists drive the movies creatively.”
Plans for this Spider-Man animated feature have been in the works since early 2015, but now it looks like Sony is finally ready to move forward. Though they remain evasive on plot details, speculation abounds that perhaps this will be the vessel for them to introduce Miles Morales as the new Spider-Man. Screen Rant will have more details on the film as they are made available.
The Animated Spider-Man Movie (official title TBA) will open in U.S. theaters on December 21st, 2018.
