Next year we will get our first look at the new MCU-version of Spider-Man, as performed by Tom Holland. The first of Tom Holland's solo Spider-Man films will follow in 2017. However, Tom Holland's Spider-Man is not the only version of the character we can expect to see on the big screen. Not long ago, Sony announced that an animated Spider-Man film was in the works, written by The Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who had previously worked with Sony Pictures Animation on their film, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.
Sony Pictures Animation also has another animated feature in the works, a film based on Emojis. But so far we've learned little about the animated film.
Sony Pictures Animation has now announced new release dates for a handful of films, including the Spider-Man and Emoji animated features. Spider-Man, though previously set for the summer of 2018, has been pushed back to December 21, 2018. The Emoji Movie is set for August 11, 2017. But there's also a new animated film announced: an adaptation of Peter Rabbit, to be released on March 23, 2018.
A director has yet to be announced for the animated Spider-Man film. It was thought that the writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller would direct, but they likely passed in favor of directing the Untitled Han Solo Film. This may also be responsible for the slight delay in the film's release. However Lord and Miller will continue to write and produce the film. While this animated film will feature Marvel's most beloved superhero, it will not take place in the same continuity as Marvel's Cinematic Universe. Instead it will be a standalone film featuring the famous web-crawler.
The Emoji Movie is co-written by Eric Siegel and Anthony Leondis. The latter will also direct. Their pitch originally garnered interest from Sony's rivals at Paramount and Warner Brothers. In the end, Sony won a bidding war for the film, which will feature tiny characters in the style of emojis. Since emojis represent a wide variety of emotions, perhaps the film will sport similarities with Pixar's recent success, Inside Out, which also focused on human emotions.
Lastly, little is know about the upcoming Peter Rabbit film. The character was originally created by Beatrix Potter, and has appeared in countless adaptations on television and has even seen new books written by Academy Award winner, Emma Thompson. Peter Rabbit has an obvious appeal to young people, and remains a timeless children's classic, so it will be interesting to see an animated, theatrical adaptation of Peter Rabbit's adventures.
The Emoji Movie will come first on August 11th, 2017, followed by the adaptation of Peter Rabbit on March 23rd, 2018. The animated Spider-Man feature will arrive on December 21st, 2018.
