Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is confirmed to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a fourth solo adventure, and here are seven things we want to see in Spider-Man 4. Spider-Man has become one of the most popular and beloved characters in the MCU, and even though he’s still young, he has already fought in some of this universe’s biggest battles, such as the Battle of Earth and a multiversal conflict in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but he has also gone through tragedies, as were the deaths of Tony Stark and his only family member, Aunt May.
The ending of No Way Home saw Peter starting all over from scratch as no one remembers or knows him anymore thanks to Doctor Strange’s final spell, but as sad as this is for him, it also makes way for Marvel to adapt some of Spider-Man’s most popular stories from the comics and introduce other long-awaited characters. However, there are a couple of things and mysteries that Spider-Man 4 has to address and solve, as No Way Home included teases for the future and left various unanswered questions – and here are some of the things that Spider-Man 4 should include.
1 Spider-Man Becoming A Street-Level Hero
As successful as Spider-Man’s story in the MCU so far has been, it has flaws that will hopefully be fixed now that he has been forced to start a completely new chapter in his life. One of the most criticized aspects of the MCU’s Spider-Man is that, as soon as he was introduced in Captain America: Civil War, he was pulled into major action by joining Team Iron Man, and later he was given major threats in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Far From Home, followed by joining the rest of the MCU’s heroes in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The MCU skipped Peter’s origin story and with that his beginnings as a superhero in Queens, so the audience hasn’t gotten a look at Spider-Man as a street-level hero, which is, ultimately, part of the character’s appeal in the comics.
Kevin Feige has already confirmed that one of the parts the MCU is now divided into is “street-level”, with Spider-Man and Daredevil living in it, so Spider-Man 4 will surely be the beginning of this much-needed transition in Spider-Man’s story. It’s being rumored that Daredevil will show up in Spider-Man’s next big screen adventure, but his presence isn’t needed for Spider-Man to go back to his roots.
2 Peter Parker Meeting New Friends (& Miles Morales?)
While it was heartbreaking to see Peter visiting MJ (Zendaya) at the end of No Way Home with the intention of reintroducing himself, and him realizing that she and Ned (Jacob Batalon) were doing fine without him, his current situation allows him to meet new people and make new friends, and there are some interesting characters in the comics who could become part of Peter’s MCU story. One of the characters rumored to be introduced in Spider-Man 4 is Miles Morales, who is speculated to be Peter’s college roommate. While this doesn’t mean that Peter has to forget about MJ and Ned and not keep his promise of coming back for them, he would benefit a lot from meeting new people and making new friends, whether they are people with no superpowers or someone with similar powers.
3 What Happened To Venom In The MCU
One of the biggest surprises in Spider-Man: No Way Home arrived in its mid-credits scene, which linked to that of Venom: Let There Be Carnage. In it, Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) was trying to understand the MCU with the help of a bartender after he and Venom were suddenly transported to this universe at the end of Venom 2. Before Eddie could fully understand what was happening, he and Venom were sent back to their universe, but the symbiote left a piece of itself in the MCU. Given the deal between Marvel and Sony over Spider-Man and other characters related to him, No Way Home’s Venom tease would have to be addressed in a Spider-Man movie, and Spider-Man 4 is the perfect chance before the symbiote gets lost amidst the rest of the events and characters in the Multiverse Saga (that is, of course, supposing Spider-Man 4 is part of the Multiverse Saga).
4 The Full Extent Of No Way Home’s Spell
The events of Spider-Man: No Way Home were triggered by a botched spell Peter asked Doctor Strange to cast, and the only way to end this mess was with another spell, though one that would have heartbreaking consequences for Peter. The final spell closed the gates of the multiverse by making the world forget Peter Parker, but the extent of the spell has been debated since No Way Home’s release. It has been speculated that there’s a flaw in the spell that will help Peter make MJ remember him, and this is supported by one detail in No Way Home’s script, while it’s also theorized that only those on Earth forgot Peter Parker, so characters like Thor, Carol Danvers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and possibly Nick Fury will still know who Peter is.
The new post-credits scene in No Way Home (added in the extended cut Spider: No Way Home - The More Fun Stuff Version) showed a bit more of how the spell affected all evidence of Peter’s existence, though it still left many questions about it. This post-credits scene is a video from Midtown School about cafeteria safety followed by Betty’s Corner With Betty Brant, where Betty recaps their high school years and shows videos and photos from Spider-Man: Homecoming and Far From Home. Peter is now either missing from those photos and videos or he’s hidden in different ways, so Spider-Man 4 will have to go more into detail about how the spell affected Peter’s life and all evidence of his existence.
5 Spider-Man’s New Love Interest
Peter and MJ are one of the most beloved couples in the MCU, but even though he promised to go back to her after No Way Home’s final spell, Peter’s story needs to move forward. As there aren’t many details about the extent of the spell, it’s unclear how long it would take Peter to make MJ and Ned remember him, but in the meantime, he can make new friends and have a new love interest as well. It’s theorized that Spider-Man 4 could see the introduction of Felicia Hardy a.k.a. Black Cat, who in the comics has a complex relationship with Spider-Man, having served as an enemy, ally, and love interest. Spider-Man 4 could also introduce the MCU’s version of Gwen Stacy, which would have a heavier emotional load now that Peter knows what happened to Gwen’s variant in Peter-Three’s (Andrew Garfield) universe.
6 Spider-Man Breaking Free From Mentor Figures
Another problem in Spider-Man’s MCU history so far is that he has depended on mentor figures from the beginning. Tony Stark was quickly established as Peter’s mentor in Captain America: Civil War, and after his death, Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) posed as a new mentor for Peter before revealing his real plans, and in No Way Home, that spot was filled by Doctor Strange. With Peter now all alone, he can finally stop being the mentee and move on on his own, which would greatly benefit him and push his character development. However, if he does meet Miles Morales, he could now become the mentor, perfectly flipping his MCU role.
7 Peter Parker At The Daily Bugle
Peter starting a new chapter in his life can also make way for one of the most popular moments in his life: working at The Daily Bugle. This fictional tabloid newspaper exists in the MCU as an online news outlet run by J. Jonah Jameson (J.K.Simmons), and it was through it that Spider-Man’s identity was revealed to the world. After the final spell in No Way Home, Jameson continued his coverage of Spider-Man’s activity, vowing to uncover the truth of his secret identity, so Spider-Man 4 has everything ready to see Peter join The Daily Bugle.
