In the debut trailer for Marvel's Spider-Man 2, revealed at the September 2021 PlayStation Showcase event, Kraven the Hunter narrates the while Peter and Miles take down some bad guys. The camera then veers into a pitch-black alley to see Venom's face creeping from the darkness. The trailer depicts a new gadget for Peter and some new techniques for Miles, but it most significantly hints at Venom joining them. If all of them are playable, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 could feature three distinct gameplay styles.

In his narration, Kraven talks of looking for someone that can match his strength. Near the end of the Marvel's Spider-Man 2 trailer, he asks, "Will one of you finally give me what I desire?," while the camera holds on Peter and Miles. They aren't the ones who answer the question, however, as Venom's voiceover replies, "Yes… WE will."

A playable Venom would allow players to not only swing around New York as Peter or Miles - who seem to be able to perform new tag-team takedowns, perhaps indicating a quick-change character system during free roam - but give them the chance to traverse the city as one of Marvel's greatest antiheroes. With three playable characters, though, Insomniac will likely need to put a decent amount of work into making each one feel distinct in order to keep Marvel's Spider-Man 2 gameplay from monotony.

Peter Parker's Spider-Man 2 Gameplay Style

The Spider-Man sequel's Peter is getting some upgrades, including a set of Iron Spider arms that seemingly don't take up a suit power slot like in Spider-Man PS4. The arms also seem to allow Peter to do some neat new combo moves, as well as release a small shockwave at surrounding enemies. Peter has always been a gadget fiend, so Insomniac should keep that as the focus of his combat style in Spider-Man 2 and, hopefully, give him some new ones yet to be seen.

While Peter has his smarts and tech to help him beat bad guys, Miles utilizes his Venom Powers. In the Marvel's Spider-Man 2 trailer, they seem to have grown more powerful as he's learned to use them. He's seen swapping from yellow bioelectricity to blue bioelectricity, which could imply a new use for the Venom Powers. Insomniac could incorporate these into new button combos to expand Miles’ arsenal. He could also get some new gadgets of his own, since he only had four in Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Venom's Spider-Man 2 Gameplay Style

Spider-Man 2 Venom Possible Playable Character

A playable Venom in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 likely wouldn't receive any gadgets, although he could have a small ability wheel for things like basic webbing, impact webs, and a few body morphs, turning the symbiote into various weapons. Venom would likely play as a brute, using mostly his physical strength and having less agility than Peter or Miles. Insomniac could incorporate more unique melee combos by mixing heavy and light attacks to produce special actions, though this would require remapping the control scheme a bit.

While Spider-Man 2 is quite a way from its release, fans are already excited to see what Insomniac has planned for Peter, Miles, and - perhaps - Venom. Many in the comments section of the trailer were also happy to see Kraven the Hunter revealed as a villain, so hopes for the sequel are high, even after just a short cinematic teaser.
