Warning: Contains light spoilers for Spider-Gwen: Shadow Clones #1Starting this March the beloved Marvel hero Spider-Gwen will be facing off against a series of villainous clones of herself in Spider-Gwen: Shadow Clones, and new art by Peach Momoko reveals her adorably villainous Doctor Octopus variant.

Spider-Gwen - the Earth-65 variant of Gwen Stacy who also goes by Ghost Spider - has been a fan-favorite character since her debut in the comics. She's been made even more popular by her starring role in the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its upcoming sequel, voiced by Hawkeye star Hailee Steinfeld. In Spider-Gwen's universe she was bitten by a radioactive spider instead of Peter Parker, who ended up dying, and since then she has spent her time split between Earth-65 and Earth-616, including a recent Gwen adventure within the multiverse.

In fact, Gwen's recent multiversal adventure in Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse saw the powerful and resilient young hero teaming up with heroic variants of herself from across many different realities, including teaming up with a deadly Wolverine version of Gwen Stacy who was immediately loved by fans. Gwenverse involved the Spider-Verse's "original spider reality" of Loomworld, where all spider-totems across the multiverse came from. Spider-Gwen ended up partnering with alternate reality versions of herself as Captain America, Captain Marvel, Wolverine, and eventually Iron Man, successfully taking down the "Terminal Six" and saving her home universe of Earth-65. However, Ghost-Spider's new miniseries adventure in Spider-Gwen: Shadow Clones - written by Emily Kim (Silk, Tiger Division) with art by Kei Zama (Edge of Spider-Verse, Marvel's Voices: Identity) from Marvel Comics, seems to be taking inspiration from Spider-Man's classic Clone Saga, which saw Peter Parker going up against several clones of himself. Now, new artwork by beloved illustrator Peach Momoko has unveiled a new look at the "Gwen Doc Ock," one of the many Spider-Man villain clones that Spider-Gwen will be up against.

Spider-Gwen Is Adorably Villainous In New Peach Momoko Design

Peach Momoko is perhaps best known for her truly stunning cover art and the "Momoko-verse," her Japanese folklore re-imagining of the Marvel Universe - shown in Demon Days and the ongoing Demon Wars - which includes gorgeous character designs. Unsurprisingly, her character design for the Gwen Stacy Doctor Octopus is really charming, giving the character a deviously evil but still undeniably "Gwen Stacy" vibe. Peach Momoko also provided the character design for "Gwenverine," the Wolverine-variant of Gwen Stacy from Gwenverse, and clearly Marvel wanted more designs from the creative illustrator. Momoko's design for the Doc Ock variant includes a practical green jumpsuit with yellow gloves and boots and aviator-like goggles and hat - a very cute, modern take on Doctor Octopus' classic green and yellow costume - with Doc Ock's iconic metal tentacles on full display. Spider-Gwen is going to be forced to battle not only her Doctor Octopus variant, but other clones of Spider-Man villains like Rhino, Sandman, Vulture, and more, while attempting to discover who is exactly behind her cloning.

Spider-Gwen really cannot seem to catch a break when it comes to adventures involving other versions of herself - honestly, a classic Spider-Man problem - and her battle with the Peach Momoko designed Gwen Doctor Octopus will surely be one for the history books.
