News broke in June 2020 that Stewart was cast as the beloved “people’s princess.” A first look image of Stewart in Spencer was released in January, with the actress donning Diana’s signature feathery blond hair. Spencer isn’t Stewart’s first time playing the title role of a biopic; in 2019, she starred in Seberg, a political thriller about the actress Jane Seberg. To prepare for her latest portrayal of an iconic figure, Stewart watched the fourth season of The Crown, which featured Emma Corrin as Diana.

Recent portrayals of Princess Diana and Prince Charles have proven to be awards season magnets; Corrin and Josh O’Connor won Golden Globes for The Crown. Stewart, already a decorated acting veteran herself, is sure to pick up accolades for her iteration of Princess Diana. Joining her as Charles is Jack Farthing, and rounding out the Spencer cast is Sally Hawkins, Timothy Spall, and Sean Harris.
