It seems that battle royales are all the rage these days, but for those wishing for fewer guns and more magic, Spellbreak is worth checking out. The expansive map, shrinking battle area, and random pickups are all familiar, but the magic system does something unique and fun.

When starting a game, players choose from one of six classes. As the name suggests, the Frostborn has the power of ice. The class can be a lot of fun, and serves as excellent support in team games, but excels solo as well.

Getting Started with the Frostborn in Spellbreak

At the start of the round, all players begin with a gauntlet of their chosen class element. They have a spell, which is their class basic attack, and for the Frostborn, this is Ice Lance. It damages enemies, sure, but that’s not what makes it special. As a Frostborn it leaves behind an Ice Trail, which allows players to skate on it to increase movement speed. In the early game, enhanced movement can be crucial, as it will allow the player and teammates to quickly find more items, enabling them to become more powerful. It also works well for when the play area is shrinking, allowing the player to get within the safe zone more quickly. Upon entering the safe zone, players level up, making their abilities more powerful, so getting there before an opponent gives the player an edge.

The second ability the player begins the game with is called the sorcery, which has a cooldown. The Frostborn has Flash Freeze which centers around the player and can block shots. It feels a little underwhelming, though certain playstyles may make great use of it. The Frostborn’s advantage is range, making them somewhat of a sniper class.

However, the real fun comes with combining the frost spells with spells from another class. Players can pick up a second gauntlet of any of the other classes during a match. So which spells synergize best with the Frostborn? While any can work, one recommendation is the Toxic Gauntlet. With this, players can freeze the Toxic Clouds, and then it explodes for toxic damage. The Toxic Spray has sort of a shotgun effect, to balance out the long shot of Ice Lance. The Stone Gauntlet is effective too, as Shockwave can shatter the Ice Trail and freeze players. It can also freeze the Frostborn too, so watch out.

The most important thing is for players to have fun, and experiment with what works for them because every playstyle is different. It is unlikely that players will win their first match. Or second. Maybe they will win their third though.

Getting a Win with the Frostborn in Spellbreak

Spellbreak Frostborn Win

There’s no single way to be the last player standing. Sometimes, it’s exiling as many players as possible. Sometimes it’s evading and letting players exile each other. Sometimes the final enemy will damage themselves by accident, which is lucky for the player.
