Geoff Keighley, the pre-show host of Gamescom 2019: Opening Night Live, teased a "special announcement" for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare for Monday night, leading fans to speculate wildly about what developer Infinity Ward may have in store for the conference. Gamescom 2019's opening night is slated to be a massive reveal event with over 15 different world premiere announcements, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is just one of many that has the potential to steal the show before it really begins.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare controversy has dulled some fan expectation for the game after it was revealed it would contain a playable child soldier section as well as some other questionable representations of violence, but Infinity Ward has insisted that it will be done tastefully. That, coupled with some significant upgrades to the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's multiplayer structure and graphical prowess, has renewed hype for one of the biggest releases of the year - something that Keighley, Infinity Ward, and the team behind Gamescom 2019 will all hope helps draw eyeballs to Gamescom 2019: Opening Night Live when it airs on Monday, August 19.

Whatever the announcement is, though, it's set to be something noteworthy, as Infinity Ward and Keighley have gone out of their way to ensure people are eagerly anticipating it. Keighley shared a special graphic on Twitter earlier this week to share the news with fans, promising both new footage of the game as well as a special announcement. What that could be is anyone's guess, but some more likely possibilities include the Spec Ops co-op gameplay details or an updated look at a battle royale mode similar to what Blackout was for Black Ops 4. Here's Keighley's tweet:

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has already had its fair share of the spotlight this summer after a huge reveal event unloaded plenty of details for fans earlier this month. Infinity Ward clearly wants to make a splash with the newest announcement, though, so it's probably going to be something that grabs fan attention worldwide - especially since it has to compete with other major developers' efforts during opening night. As one of the last big game releases of 2019, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare could be set for a profitable holiday season provided it maintains the momentum it has managed to generate over the past few months.

With that in mind, it's pretty obvious fans will be treated to more than just a quick nod at a feature that's interesting. With a prime time slot during Gamescom 2019: Opening Night Live and the video game world watching, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will attempt to cement its status as a must-own iteration of a time-tested franchise on Monday night.
