As Spawn’s release approaches on Mortal Kombat 11, new teasers include his interaction with Joker – which involves a Violator reference that fans of the anti-hero are sure to love. Spawn is the latest character set to appear on MK11 and will be available on early access on March 17, followed by a full release a week later.
Mortal Kombat 11’s Kombat Pack purchase offered early access to all additional characters provided for the fighting game over the past year. Some of these characters were long-time MK favorites such as Shang Tsung and Sindel. However, as is custom, the pack also included famed characters from other universes; in this case, Terminator, Joker, and Spawn. The last character to be released, Spawn fights with all his familiar weapons, including plenty of cape moves, chain slashing, automatic weapons, mace-bashing, and necroplasm attacks. He’s also buddies with Batman.
But it’s the homage to past Spawn comics and the 1990s animated series that have players especially excited. As Mortal Kombat 11 on Twitter revealed, Spawn’s interactions with the Joker are a wicked reference to his demon masters. “Sounds like you have a case of the grumps,” Joker taunts. “I f***ing hate clowns,” responds Spawn. It may not mean much to others, but Spawn fans immediately recognized it as a reference to Violator: In the Spawn universe, Violator is a powerful demon sent to watch, torment, and challenge Spawn at the worst times possible – and usually wears the face of a fat, impish clown while he’s doing it.
This reference is only one of many found in Spawn’s MK11 content (including suitably bloody fatalities). The character himself is once again voiced by Keith David, who provided the voice of Spawn on the HBO animated series. Spawn’s intros include one where he carries the speared head of Violator’s clown form. An outro shows Spawn being dragged to hell to face his chief foe Malebolgia as well. While all MK11’s extra characters have touches referencing their own stories, Spawn’s details, in particular, are filled with Easter eggs like these that are made for long-time fans.
MK players will get to find out just how Spawn feels in person in a few weeks. Based on his reception so far, he’s set to be one of the most popular new playable characters the game has seen – and Mortal Kombat 11 needs that badly right now. The game has been snubbed by championship event EVO 2020 (which, thus far, is still planned for August), and Spawn is the last officially announced character to be released for the game. Has it been successful enough to warrant another Kombat Pack? These next few weeks could prove crucial to the game’s future.
