Todd McFarlane will walk away from the Spawn reboot if the script is changed too much. McFarlane is the successful comic book artist behind characters like Venom and Spawn. In 1997, Mark A.Z. Dippé directed the poorly received Spawn movie starring Michael Jai White, but now, McFarlane is looking to reboot the character with a new R-Rated movie.
McFarlane has been teasing fans for the better part of a decade about a new Spawn movie. At first he teased a sequel to the 1997 film, but later on he revealed that his movie was instead a reboot that won't retell Spawn's origin story. Jamie Foxx was officially cast as Spawn for the reboot last year and Spawn has also reportedly cast Jeremy Renner as Twitch Williams. Todd McFarlane will be directing the movie himself, which will be his feature film directorial debut. Updates about the movie have been scarce this year, but Spawn is supposed to start filming this summer. However, McFarlane has indicated he might walk away from the project all together.
Comicbook was able to sit down with McFarlane, who gave a new update about the film's development. McFarlane said that the current issue is getting everyone to agree on a script, before he can really start pitching Spawn to prospective movie studios. McFarlane gave a simmilar update back in February, when he revealed that the script for Spawn was still being tweaked. The only difference with this update is that McFarlane has now threatened to leave the project if his vision is changed more than he wants. His full statement can be read below:
"The money's sitting on the sidelines ready to go. I just need to get everyone that wants to put in money to shake their heads to the same script. As you can imagine, everyone has a slightly different version of it in their head. You just go and trying to appease a handful of people while not giving in to what it is that I'm trying to do myself. Because if I have to change it too much, I'll just walk away from it all."
McFarlane has been good with keeping his fans in the loop on the development of the movie, but Spawn seems to keep hitting bumps in the road to production. The project has been delayed a number of times and even though McFarlane keeps giving new updates, the film has yet to even start filming. McFarlane finished a script for Spawn back in 2016, but three years later, the script seems to still be going through revisions.
With the passion McFarlane seems to have for the project, it's hard to believe he would simply give up on the movie, but it certainly wouldn't be the first time a director walked away from a movie due to creative differences. Needless to say, it would be a big blow to fans of Spawn if McFarlane just walked away from the project. After all, fans have waited years to see Spawn back up on the big screen
