Netflix has released a full-length trailer for Space Sweepers, a forthcoming South Korean space opera that has drawn comparisons to Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Wars. The film follows a ragtag crew of space junk collectors who stumble upon an extremely dangerous robot that can disguise itself as an innocent-looking child. Directed by Jo Sung-hee, Space Sweepers is being touted as the first Korean spacefaring blockbuster.

The trailer, shared on Netflix's YouTube channel, begins with “Earth 2092” superimposed as voiceover claims Earth is no longer habitable. As a result, citizens flee into space, including four misfit salvagers aboard The Victory who collect space debris for money. They also “just might save the world.” They are Tae-ho (Song Joong-ki), Captain Jang (Kim Tae-ri), Tiger Park (Jin Seon-kyu), and a robot (Yoo Hae-jin) similar to Alan Tudyk’s K-2SO from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. During a routine space haul, this small crew of junkers gets a lot more than they bargained for when they stumble upon a young android girl, which they soon discover to be a dangerous weapon. Replete with spaceships, robots, and sumptuous special effects, it is no wonder why Space Sweepers is being compared to Guardians of the Galaxy and the Star Wars saga. It's even easy to imagine it spawning a franchise of its own focusing on The Victory spaceship. Considering the success of past Korean exports such as Bong Joon-Ho’s Best Picture-winning Parasite and Park Chan-wook’s psychological thriller The Handmaiden, Space Sweepers may become the most popular film to come out of the country due to its more mainstream appeal. The film releases on Netflix February 5.
