The latest Space Jam: A New Legacy trailer is officially released. After years of rumors, a followup to the 1996 classic Space Jam is finally fast approaching a release date. This time around, NBA star LeBron James takes on the leading role, portraying a fictionalized version of himself. Space Jam: A New Legacy looks to stand apart from its predecessor by telling a story about fatherhood. James' relationship with his son Dom serves as the film's emotional core, as the two find themselves trapped in a virtual reality populated by famous Warner Bros. characters.

With Space Jam: A New Legacy set to open in theaters and stream on HBO Max in mid-July, WB has revved up their marketing efforts to raise awareness and generate excitement. The first Space Jam: A New Legacy trailer came out in April, and since then there's been a bevy of new posters, TV spots, and other materials to promote the film's release. There's just over a month to go until Space Jam: A New Legacy's debut, and now another preview's been released.

Today, WB released the next Space Jam: A New Legacy trailer. Check it out in the space below:

While the first Space Jam: A New Legacy trailer took time to highlight the various Warner Bros. properties that will be featured, this new one focuses much more exclusively on James and his dynamic with the Tune Squad. Similar to the 1996 original, the movie looks to utilize the classic underdog trope from sports films, with James and his teammates finding themselves in a high-stakes basketball game. Not only is the fate of James' son up in the air, if the Tune Squad loses, the characters will be deleted. The preview also provides a look at the villainous Goon Squad in action, showing why they'll be a formidable opponent. Space Jam: A New Legacy's answer to the original's Monstars is a super team consisting of real NBA and WNBA players, including James' Los Angeles Lakers teammate Anthony Davis.

The family story at the heart of Space Jam: A New Legacy is what should differentiate it from its predecessor (hopefully for the better), but the followup is making sure to pay homage to the franchise's roots. There are plenty instances here of classic Looney Tunes comedy, including Wile E. Coyote putting himself through the multiplier, Daffy Duck's approach to coaching, and an amusing halftime argument. All in all, Space Jam: A New Legacy looks like it will be a fun an entertaining film when it releases later this summer. The original is beloved in some circles, but it wasn't a critical darling, so hopefully the followup will turn out even better and give WB and HBO Max another hit.
