A new poster promoting the release of Space Jam: A New Legacy revealed when a new trailer would be released. The highly-anticipated sequel starring LeBron James has been years in the making since first announced in 2014. The film, directed by Malcolm D. Lee (Girls Trip), follows the beloved 1996 original Space Jam starring superstar Michael Jordan. This time the focus will be on a familial bond rather than centering around the basketball superstar.
Space Jam: A New Legacy will premiere on July 16 simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max. Produced by James, Maverick Carter, and Ryan Coogler (Black Panther), A New Legacy will center around James' attempts to connect with his son Dom (Cedric Joe). The latter aspires to become a videogame developer. The father-son duo gets trapped in a virtual reality ruled by AI-G Rhythm (voiced by Don Cheadle. They team up with the gang of unruly, unathletic Looney Tunes to win a basketball game against AI-G's virtual team dubbed the Goon Squad.
And Rotten Tomatoes revealed on Twitter a new poster to promote the movie and teased when fans can expect another full-length trailer. The poster shows Bugs Bunny and his gang of Looney Tunes peering below James' body as he takes a jump shot. The poster precedes the upcoming trailer, set to release Wednesday, June 9.
Aside from James, Space Jam: A New Legacy will feature a star-studded cast including NBA and WNBA stars who will voice the members of the rival Good Squad. Those voice actors include Anthony Davis, Damian Lillard, Diana Taurasi, Klay Thompson, and Nneka Ogqumike. Additional acting credits include Zendaya as the voice of Lola Bunny, Gabriel Iglesias voicing Speedy Gonzales, and Sonequa Martin-Green as Kamiyah James, LeBron's wife. Even though the film is not a proper sequel to the original, Jordan is rumored to make an unexpected cameo.
The teasers and trailers for A New Legacy have mostly given a glimpse of James and the Tune Gang. The new trailer may highlight the star-studded Goon Squad. And could provide a more detailed look at what Jordan's involvement will be. Space Jam: A New Legacy has big shoes to fill following the beloved original, which earned over $230 million worldwide and sparked a successful merchandising campaign estimated to be worth more than $6 billion. But thanks to James' star-power and years of development to ensure the film is just right, Space Jam: A New Legacy already has a lot of hype behind it and an A-list cast of characters to entice even the most skeptical movie-goers.
